BOOKISH: Satisfying the hungriest poetic ear

POSTED: Wednesday, July 13, 2011, 3:00 PM

Each week, Emily Apisa puts together a rundown of book-centric events that’ll keep you “lit” like a firecracker all week long.

[ Wednesday ]

➤ Dwayne Booth (aka Mr. Fish)
This cheeky political cartoonist has been featured in major publications across the country, including the Village Voice, Vanity Fair and LA Weekly. As an equal-opportunity offender, Mr. Fish has illustrated commentary on everything from Wall Street scumbags to Executive Branch hotshots. Come hear Mr. Fish talk about his caricatures of American life as depicted in his new book Go Fish: How to Win Contempt and Influence People. Wed., July 13, 7 p.m., free, Moonstone Arts Center, 110A S. 13th St., 215-735-9600.

[ Thursday ]

➤ Erica Jong with contributors Julie Klam and Karen Abbott
Jong has solicited work from over 25 women authors in her collection of essays explaining the role sex plays in the female life. With so many points of view, Sugar in My Bowl: Real Women Write About Real Sex ranges from heartfelt to humorous as each author draws from personal experiences and upbringings. Joining Jong at this author event are Klam, an Emmy-nominated writer with two books to her name and Abbott, a NYT bestselling Philadelphia scribe. Thu., July 14, 7:30 p.m., free, Free Library (Central Branch), 1901 Vine St., 215-567-4341.

[ Friday ]

➤ Summer Reading and Listening Program
This summer, Manayunk bookstore The Spiral Bookcase, and music store, Main Street Music, are teaming up for a cross-promotional giveaway. Each month, related books and albums will be singled out, and when these selections are purchased, your name will be entered into a drawing for a prize. July’s theme of singer/songwriter pairings includes The Essential Johnny Cash and Cash: The Autobiography. July through Sept., The Spiral Bookcase, 112 Cotton St., 215-482-0704.

[ Saturday ]

➤ Poets in the Park
Squat on a patch of grass or lawn chair at this outdoor poetry reading. Six poets will be featured including Thaddeus Rutkowski whose newest publication is a novel: Haywire. Philly-based poets Leonard Gontarek, G Emil Reutter and Diane Sahms will be reciting their work, as well. Massachusetts sends Timothy Gager and Chad Parenteau to help satisfy even the hungriest poetic ear. Sat., July 16, 7:30 p.m., free, Lions Park, 7900 Oxford Ave., foxchasereview.org.

[ Sunday ]

➤ MOSAIC Open Mic Night
Movement of the Oppressed Sectors Acting In Concert (MOSAIC) hosts a monthly open mic to promote idea-sharing among Philadelphia’s various communities. Whether you express yourself best through music or through poetry, all kinds of creative outlets are celebrated on the MOSAIC stage. Warren Longmire, a member of Philly’s Adult Slam Team, is the night’s special guest. Sun., July 17,7 p.m., free, The A- Space, 4722 Baltimore Ave., the-aspace.org.

[ Monday ]

➤ International Zine Month
July celebrates independent publishing in its purest form: the zine. A trip to the craft store can give any author the tools to reach a broad audience, but Philly’s zine scene is no grade school, hot-glue-gunned number. Check out Zine of the Month, a Philly-based company that, as the name suggests, promotes 12 zines a year on the local and national level. Through July 31, free.

[ Tuesday ]

➤ Alice Ozma and Robert Strauss
At this author event, one theme will bind the two readings: father/daughter dynamics. Alice Ozma’s The Reading Promise: My Father and the Books We Shared, is a memoir about the author’s special relationship with her librarian father. Daddy’s Little Goalie is Robert Strauss’ book based on his relationship with his two daughters as he watched them develop both on and off the field. Come hear these authors read selections and discuss their books. Tue., July 19, 7:30 p.m., The Free Library (Central Branch), 1901 Vine St., 215-567-4341.
