Dead Sea Scrolls Come Alive!

As the story goes, one day in 1947, some young Bedouin shepherds lost a goat, leading them on a search through the Judean Desert that eventually led to a cave where they found jars filled with ancient scrolls. The goat may have gotten away, but what they had before them were the initial pieces of what came to be known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest surviving biblical manuscript. Upon further investigation, it's been determined that these scrolls date back to the period between the third century B.C.E. to 68 C.E., when Jesus of Nazareth roamed the earth and the Second Temple stood in Jerusalem. The implications of these findings were enormous: Archeologists got busy uncovering and preserving the scrolls and theologists devoured the ancient text for “proof” of biblical events and modern-day Israel was imbued with deep historical significance for followers of three major religions. Since the initial finding, the Dead Sea Scrolls have been housed in museums throughout the world, including now at our own Franklin Institute. Through October, the institute will be showing over 600 fragments, four of which have never been seen by the public. The exhibit kicks off this weekend with back-to-back lectures on the lasting significance of these incredible documents. Debora Ben Ami of the Israel Antiquities Authority begins the day with a discussion of ancient Jerusalem and its continued impact on our sense of religious history and Dr. Pnina Shore follows with a lecture on the preservation of the scrolls through modern digitization efforts.

3 p.m.-4 p.m., 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m., free with museum admission of $12.50-$16.50, The Franklin Institute, 222 N. 20th St., advance registration at 215-448-1200, fi.edu.
