watering the family tree

Making a family tree used to be a hand-drawn affair, writing your name in a little box and connecting it to the boxes of your mother, father, sister, etc. These days, genealogy has joined the masses online, expanding the possibilities for tracking heredity and establishing family relationships. While your aunt may have once hinted about those strange goat-herding relatives in the Swiss Alps, the internet can confirm that they are in fact Germans and they gave up the shepherd life a century ago to pursue cheese-making. Tonight the library is offering a free class to teach people about the library's plethora of genealogy resources; the only requirements are a library card and a basic knowledge of computers. The first 12 people to show up at the front desk will be guaranteed a spot, so make sure to show up at least 30 minutes early.

6:30 p.m., free, FLP Central Branch, 1901 Vine St., libwww.freelibrary.org.
