All Kinds of Minds

Why are some people calculus professors and others struggle with basic arithmetic? Why are some kids painting masterpieces at age 5 while their classmates can't draw a straight line? Educators have long struggled with the challenge of teaching the same subject to students who learn at different rates, moving past simple classifications of “dumb” and “smart” to a more accepting view that encompasses the needs of a diverse range of minds. In her talk All Kinds of Minds, scholar Temple Grandin will address the subject of mental variation, acknowledging the cornucopia of learning styles found in both humans and animals. A professor of animal sciences and a longtime autism advocate, Grandin shows that differences in the way we process information are not only natural but necessary for a functioning society.

6:30 p.m., free, The Academy of Natural Sciences, 1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, ansp.org.
