Head Off & Split

Nikky Finney writes that deep kind of layered poetry that feels like you unpeel generations with each word. Born in a small South Carolina fishing village to parents active in the Civil Rights Movement, it's not difficult to understand why family history plays such a prominent role in her poetry. She writes of the superstitions and lunar cycles that dictated the routines of her family, whose farming and fishing was dependent on the natural rhythms of the earth. She speaks out about the alternating shame and dignity that molded her family's identity as Black southerners during a time of heated and changing race relations. Her ability to effortlessly blend the personal with the political has been acknowledged with several prestigious awards, including the National Book Award for Poetry for her most recent book Head Off & Split. Tonight, the library welcomes Finney as part of the Philadelphia Book Festival, a five-day celebration of reading and literacy featuring readings from award-winning authors, story slams and more.

7:30 p.m., $15, FLP Central Branch, 1901 Vine St., freelibrary.org/bookfestival.
