Under a Soprano Sky: Philly's Own, Sonia Sanchez!

I don't have enough room here to list all the awards Sonia Sanchez has received over her long and fruitful career as a poet, but let's just say she's proof that poetry can indeed lead to success. Born in Alabama and raised in Harlem after the rennaisance that put that neighborhood on the cultural and literary map, Sanchez has maintained a poetic style that stays true to the places she's been. Her rich and varied political life have helped to shape her poetry, and her mastery of language have arguably enriched her work as a political activist. An integrationist in the '60s, her position became more separatist after reading the work of Malcolm X. Once a member of the Nation of Islam, she left the group after feeling let down by the group's position on women. Sanchez has lectured at over 500 colleges and universities in the US and was the first ever Presidential Fellow at Temple University, where she taught for 22 years. If this isn't enough to bring you to the library tonight, I might also add that, since the beginning of the year, she's held the honorable position of being Philly's first ever poet laureate. Yeah, that's right, she's got “official voice of Philadelphia” on her resume.

7:30 p.m., free, FLP Central Branch, 1901 Vine St., freelibrary.org.
