Bookish: Spiritual Anarchists, art about literacy, and Cornel West

POSTED: Thursday, April 26, 2012, 5:28 PM

Anarchism and spirituality may seem an unlikely combo: With their goal of smashing the hierarchy, anarchists have long been painted as angry and self-righteous kids. The spiritualist, in turn, evokes the calm meditator, the church-goer, and the peace-seeking monk. But are their goals really so different? Tonight's discussion, Anarchism and Spirituality: Liberation Comes from Within, explores the overlap of two seemingly opposing paths, highlighting their shared quest for inner salvation. The talk will focus on such philosophical mind benders as: “How can we be truly free?” and “Can we be free and still have responsibilities?”, delving into that realm of thought that is most fundamental—and also most challenging—to being human. Featuring anarcho-feminist thinker extraordinaire Ula K., the discussion is sure to bring your brain into high gear and prove that an anarchist can indeed be a spiritual being.
