Bookish: Spiritual Anarchists, art about literacy, and Cornel West

POSTED: Thursday, April 26, 2012, 5:28 PM

It is difficult to give credit in words to the accomplishments and impact of Dr. Cornel West. His lifelong commitment to racial justice and class equality has taken many forms: Princeton University professor, civil rights activist, lecturer, and award-winning author, to name a few. His book Race Matters is now a classic in the literature of American racial politics, and helped put him on the map as one of the leading scholars in the field. With his overflowing academic resume, don't think West is some stuffy, washed-up professor: The man has put out three spoken word albums with collaborations from artists including Prince and KRS-One, made his film debut in The Matrix, and is an accomplished classical violinist. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone worthy of sharing the stage with him tonight at the library, except for maybe his good friend and colleague Tavis Smiley, named one of “The World's Most Influential People” by Time Magazine. A prolific thinker and human rights activist in his own right, Smiley has collaborated with West for the progressive Smiley and West show on Public Radio International. Most recently, the duo spent a summer touring across 18 American cities to study the impact of urban poverty. The result, a book titled The Rich and the Rest of Us: A Poverty Manifesto, will be the basis for tonight's discussion.

7:30 p.m., $10, FLP Central Branch, 1901 Vine St., libwww.freelibrary.org
