Literacy Within Reach

Illiteracy is a problem rarely discussed in this country. Thought to be a social issue reserved for the developing world, the US population will in fact suffer from illiteracy so long as we continue to have vast inequalities in our public school system. The inability to read can be a source of shame, rendering people voiceless as well as illiterate. Beyond any systemic failures, people with dyslexia and other learning hurtles are often forced to work twice as hard to master the basics of reading and writing. Memphis' own Robert Bain has curated an exhibit to highlight the issue of illiteracy, gathering together a group of artists whose own learning struggles provide the basis for their art. Through a variety of media, these artists touch on such issues as illiteracy as a tool for racial oppression and the ongoing stigma of illiteracy passed down through generations. On view at Drexel's Pearlstein Gallery, the exhibit brings together visual art, text and social commentary for a powerful look at a national issue still covered in secrecy and shame.

Through May 4th, Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, 3215 Market St., drexel.edu
