BOOKISH: Celebs on bikes, Easter tales and a literary safari

From the early accounts of English colonists to the contemporary euro-trip blog, humans have had a fascination with documenting our travels. Being in a foreign place seems to heighten our senses, inspiring vivid discriptions we can share with friends back home. Tonight at the Kelly Writers House, three prominent writers will gather to discuss the genre of travel writing in the 21st century. Long gone are the days of dipping the quill in the ink to jot down the day's events in a personal journal; the wealth of new media allows for a more cohesive documentation of faraway places, and often makes those places seem a little less far away. If a student studying abroad for the semester can tweet, photograph, blog, and video the whole journey, does she feel as though she's really “getting away”? Is it still possible to see something new on a trip even if the images from your destination have been pre-ingrained in your mind from countless hours on flickr? As the possibilities of technology continue to grow, it seems the very boundaries of “travel writing” become augmented and blurred, making it due time for a conversation among talented scholars in the field.

6 p.m., free, Kelly Writers House, 3805 Locust Walk, writing.upenn.edu/wh.
