Black Flags and Windmills

One of the most common misconceptions about anarchism is that its anti-government ideals mean they're hoping for the end result of a complete lack of human organization. In his recent book Black Flags and Windmills: Hope, Anarchy, and the Common Ground Collective, activist scott crow argues counter to this idea with his account of the organizing efforts undertaken by himself and other members of the Common Ground Collective — a group dedicated to helping the New Orleans community in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, and one of the largest anarchist-inspired organizations in recent U.S. history. From the Superdome to FEMA, post-Katrina New Orleans was a horrific example of a government failing to respond to the needs of its people in a city already marked by extreme poverty and lack of infrastructure. In response, crow, along with former Black Panther Malik Rakim and other dedicated activists, turned to anarchist tactics to establish emergency medical clinics, food banks and other basic services. Crow's account tells the story of a community coping with crises both natural and man-made, and the resulting journey towards self-sufficiency.
