Happy Birthday, Gloria Steinem!

One of the most notable icons of second-wave feminism, Gloria Steinem paved the way for early discussions of abortion, gender equality, and women in the workplace. Her long career in journalism — from freelancing for Esquire to co-founding the influential Ms. magazine — made her a force to be reckoned with in literary and activist circles. Her personal life often mirrored her commitment to changing societal norms, becoming a first-time bride at age 66 in a wedding performed by Wilma Mankiller, the first female head of the Cherokee Nation. Whether you're new to Steinem or want to celebrate her birthday with a classic read, try picking up a copy of her 1983 masterpiece Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions, which includes interviews with notable women like Marilyn Monroe and Pat Nixon and Steinem's famous account of her own stint as an overworked Playboy bunny. Look for a copy at your local library branch.
