Saturday: Even if sci-fi trilogies aren't your thing, you've got to admit there must be a reason why books like The Hunger Games are consuming American readers at such an alarming rate. Jam-packed with fantastical innovations and thrilling plot twists, science fiction can offer a new perspective on our own “normal” world. This is the idea behind The Duchess of the Shallows, the newly published book from local authors Daniel Ravipinto and Neil McGarry. Set in the fog-covered city of Rodaas, Shallows is the story of an epic game in which every citizen is either pawn or player and no one is as they appear. The imaginative characters are brought to life with illustrations from Amy Houser, a toy designer and visual artist whose drawings evoke an intriguingly beautiful underworld. The two co-authors will speak this afternoon alongside fellow literary talents Alan Elyshevitz, Kelly Lin Roncace and Sadeqa Johnson, for this month's edition of Local Author Day. Whether you're looking to tap in to the local writing community or you're just in need of a summer read, a journey to Mt. Airy's Big Blue Marble Bookstore will be well worth the trip.

3 p.m.-4:30 p.m., free, Big Blue Marble Bookstore, 551 Carpenter Lane, bigbluemarblebooks.com.
