Monday: There's no denying that poetry can have healing powers. Read aloud, the emotions contained in poetic stanzas have a surprising ability to hit the hearts and minds of listeners. When a performer fully loses herself in those words, the poem consumes the entire room and each person present. It's not a rule that you have to be sad to write powerful poetry, but poems can indeed function as a kind of emotional medicine for both the poet and listener alike. Tonight's "Lil' Addict" spoken word event acknowledges this power head-on. Through poetry and other spoken arts, performers will address topics of addiction, crime and homelessness, bringing these topics out of the anonymous space of the news and imbuing them with personal experience and human sensitivity. It's the honesty of a support space with the artistic vision of a poetry reading—a place to share or sit quietly, mourn or simply listen. With performances from local favorites Maurice Henderson and Robert Hayes, tonight's event will confirm that beautiful words can grow from a place of loss and poetry indeed has the power to heal.

7 p.m., $10, Moonstone Arts Center, 110A S. 13th St., moonstoneartscenter.org.
