BOOKISH: Julia Alvarez, Apocalypse and the Politics of Pot

Among American adults, studies have shown that approximately half the population has smoked pot at least once, yet the substance remains criminalized in almost all US states, leading many a confused stoner to wonder “WTF dude?!” Here to answer that question and more is Dr. John Mangano, who will speak tonight about the herb's medical uses, history and facts. Even in states like California, where marijuana is officially legal for medical purposes, the details remain hazy: Is a headache a medical condition? Do you have to be a licensed doctor to prescribe weed? A contentious topic throughout American history, legalization supporters can be found among the youth and the elderly, on East and West coasts and on both sides of the partisan line. Spawning entire genres of music, film and television, marijuana has been the source of both a good laugh and many a criminal arrest, making it due time to shift through the shake and talk seriously about the issue of dope.
