CONCERT REVIEW: Yeasayer @ the Troc, 6/17
The Troc was packed Friday night when Yeasayer returned for another night of bright lights, lasery synths and Tastykakes. As the venue was filling up, Germany's Hush Hush hit play on his iPod and performed his one-man show. He danced, he wore suit jackets and many pairs of sunglasses, and his music was filthy enough to make Prince uncomfortable (check out "Sex Party" from his album, OH GOD 2010).
Smith Westerns, the most conventional band of the night, came out to a confused crow. The idea of a band with guitars, bass, drums and keyboard seemed a bit excessive compared to what they'd just seen, and their message about wanting the girl (aaawww) and Hush Hush's rants about sleeping (to say it nicely) with her was a little jarring. Most of Western's set came from their critically acclaimed album, Dye It Blonde, including "Only One," "Imagine Pt. 3" and fan favorite, "Weekend."
"Today I had one of those, what are they called ... Tastykakes," Chris Keating, Yeasayer singer/keyboardist, shared with the Troc about halfway through their set. "I think I can still taste it in my beard." Mixed throughout that set, Yeasayer unleashed new songs, many of which were in the same vein as those found on Odd Blood. "O.N.E." and "Rome" were the main arteries for energy in the air, getting everyone moving, some even finding dance partners. Despite feeling that energy and Keating even affirming, "Let's keep that energy through the rest of the show," Yeasayer played just over an hour. However, the synthed-out dance rock and hint of Tastykake in the air provided an overflow of energy to keep the crowd satisfied until next time.
