Tyler MFA Thesis Exhibitions: Bethany Pelle and Erica Prince

Temple’s Tyler School of Art is brimming with creative talent (obviously) and its that time of year when the graduating students get to show off all of their hard work. As someone also working on an MFA thesis, I thought I’d offer my support and go see what the Tyler kids have been cooking up. This weekend marks the beginning of a month and a half long series of rotating exhibits at the Temple Gallery; students of Ceramics, Fibers and Material Studies, Printmaking, Glass, Photography, Painting, Sculpture, Jewery/Metals and Graphic Arts will have a chance to have their work displayed for about 3-4 days at a time. Right now, you can see Bethany Pelle’s “Give the Cat a Name” and Erica Prince’s “Other Ways of Being,” but only until tomorrow…so get up and go if you want to catch this set.

Prince’s “Other Way’s of Being” offers just that — using found object materials, she re-presents their function in sculpture, creating pieces that are unexpectedly pleasing to the eye. I am particularly compelled by the alembic quality that Prince’s pieces exude; Megastructure Model 6 is one of my favs. Pelle’s “Give the Cat a Name” is a multimedia project which utilizes sculpture, installation and video in an attempt to translate the “primacy of the struggle for a sense of belonging and the poignancy of longing to be” to the viewer. What do hair ties around a doorknob, a gold chain wedged between old couch cushions and a mirror with painted glass say about who we are and how we live? Go find out.

Pelle and Prince through March 24, Reception tonight, Exhibition through May 12, free, Tyler School of Art Temple Gallery, 12th and Norris St., 215-777-9144, temple.edu/tyler/exhibtions
