“A Circumstantial Assembly” at Moore’s Levy Gallery

There is always a lot to be seen at Moore College of Art & Design, and it’s no wonder — there’s 10 official galleries and exhibit venues on campus and off. One of the ones on campus, the Levy Gallery, boasts 1,200 square feet of exhibition space. The Levy historically caters to collaborative and experimental exhibits, and the current show, “A Circumstantial Assembly,” falls under both of those categories. Like many exhibitions around town this month, “A Circumstantial Assembly” is being held in conjunction with the FiberPhiladelphia celebration.

Including work by artists Jill Marleah Bell, Susan Benarcik, Ana Hernandez, Mark Khaisman, Daniel Kornrumpf, Jedediah Morfit and Binod Shrestha, the exhibit features many different interpretations of traditions and techniques in fiber art. The pieces taken together in the large space elicit questions about how one concept (the medium of textiles, in this case) can be “illustrated” in strikingly different ways. One of the works is a set of four illuminated panels, looking a bit like X-ray viewing screens, with the image of an electrified-looking Edwardian chair repeated across all four a la Warhol. Across the room, a red stairwell rises out of the gallery floor and reaches over the wall. The not immediately apparent connection between these and the rest of the pieces invite the viewer to add his or her own sense of interpretation, as well.

Through March 17, free, Moore College of Art & Design, 1916 Race St., 215-965-4027, thegalleriesatmoore.org.
