Sara Horne  at Muse Gallery

If you wander down the street a bit from The Clay Studio, you’re sure to pass by Muse Gallery. Do yourself another favor and stop in. A great little space, bright and airy, the gallery is impeccably run by its 18 members who take turns in the rotating exhibitions, each for a month about once every two years. This month, co-op newcomer Sara Horne exhibits natural forms in glass and silk in her second solo show, "Rhythm."

Horne’s multi-media sculptural installations are relatively large-scale for her; some are hung and others set atop viewing tables. “Usually I work with smaller pieces,” says the artist; “with this project, the title refers as much to the works as it does the process of creating them.” Horne explains that for "Rhythm," even the process itself — make several tiny pieces, fuse them together to make larger ones, repeat — became very rhythmic.

The blown-glass and organza-silk creations with titles like Acropora and Tube Worms are also inspired by the sea, the creatures that live in it and the cadence of the waves and tides. The delicacy and intricacy in Horne’s works are some of their greatest strengths, and the installation as a whole truly evokes the sway and rhythm of the ocean; I felt as if I could reach my fingers through the Deep Sea Anemone and the individual glass tubes would shrink at my touch. When you walk into the gallery, you will think that you’ve walked into a crystalline underwater world of art.

Reception March 11, through April 1, free, Muse Gallery, 52 N. Second St., 215-627-5310, musegalleryphiladelphia.com.
