Works on Paper at LGTripp

Across town in Old City, LG Tripp’s current exhibition of works on paper brings together eleven artists for another group show. The space itself exudes a traditional gallery feel – open and light, just a tad-bit formal – and plays perfect host to this particular show. While all of the works have been created on paper, several different media of implementation have been employed, including pencil, ink, paint, collage and printmaking. The overall effect is quite striking. The restrictions of a paper base bring a sense of unity to the exhibit, while the myriad techniques keep you interested as you make your way around the gallery.

A few of my favorite picks from this show art Plamen Veltchev’s Vestiges, Paul Fabozzi’s Spectral Variant (Layers) 2b.12 and Donna Usher’s Meditation E. In Vestiges, Veltchev uses ink to create the sense of entrapment as a burnt-sienna swirl is caught between rigid umber bars. Spectral Variant… makes use of the lightness and density that you can achieve with colored pencil. Swatches of geometric color and thinly-layered lines create an aura that elicits a visual of sound. And confetti. Finally, Usher’s acrylic Meditation makes me think of Kandinsky. This exhibit is refreshingly traditional in form, and excitingly unique in content. The fragility of the medium, the lightness of paper somehow really meshes well with the coming Spring.

Through March 31, free, LG Tripp Gallery, 47-49 N. Second St., 215-923-3110, lgtrippgallery.com.
