“Flock” at the Schuylkill Center

If you have a second today or tomorrow, take a little nature walk to the Schuylkill Center in Roxborough to see the exhibit “Flock” before it flies away on Sunday. Through artist residencies and an exhibition program, the Environmental Art Department at the Center has established itself as a unique venue in Philly, the only one that shows exclusively site-specific environmental installations. All artwork shown at the Center is created within a context of environmental sustainability and rehabilitation. At different points throughout the year, you’ll find outdoor installations (often contemporary forms of land art) as well as four or five curated indoor exhibitions addressing local ecology in a variety of media in the Center’s Welcome Gallery.

In the current indoor exhibition, “Flock,” bird is the word. Featuring work by artists Lisa Haun, Jennie Thwing and Lorenzo Buffa, the show presents images, sounds and interactive displays involving many of the region’s bird species. One interesting part is photographer Lisa Haun’s method — spending lots of time studying the taxidermied birds in the Center’s permanent collection, she manages to almost bring them back to life with her camera. The sets, poses and “personalities” she captures in these stills are both intriguing and a little creepy. If you didn’t know better, you’d think you were looking at images of live specimens. This, coupled with the background soundtrack of warblers and blue jays, makes for an engaging exhibit, indeed. Tweet, tweet!

Through Feb. 18, free, The Schuylkill Center, 8480 Hagy’s Mill Road, 215-482-7300, schuylkillcenter.org.
