CURTAIN CALL: Focusing on male butts and genitalia

Each week, Michael Gold breezes past those big-name theater companies to turn a spotlight on Philly's indie stages. This week: celebrate the last few days of Black History Month with Martin and Malcolm, let the Dumpsta Players poison your mind and get your dance on with John Jasperse.

CURTAIN CALL: Focusing on male butts and genitalia

POSTED: Tuesday, February 21, 2012, 1:00 PM
Filed Under: Arts Theater

It’s been 12 years since choreographer John Jasperse premiered Fort Blossom, his steadfastly erotic exploration of the body. The piece highlighted parts of the body generally cast aside from Western dance, and its focus on bare butts and male genitalia drew attention to the surprising lack of eroticism in the professional dance world. Little more than a decade later, the work remains an assault on the conventions of modern dance, which is why Jasperse’s eponymous company will perform an extended version of the piece (appropriately titled Fort Blossom Revisited) after a week of residency at Bryn Mawr. It’s rare for Jasperse to revive any of his work, and if this modern update is as experimental as its source, it’s well worth the trek out to the Main Line.

Fri., Feb. 24 to Sun., Feb. 26, $20, 150 N. Merion Ave., Bryn Mawr, 610-526-5210, johnjasperse.org.
