CURTAIN CALL: Not your run-of-the-mill February love fests

Each week, Michael Gold breezes past those big-name theater companies to turn a spotlight on Philly's indie stages.

It wouldn’t be February without some amour-themed fare, but kudos to the Montgomery Theater for starting the month with Gina Gionfriddo’s Pulitzer-winning Becky Shaw. The thorny comedy features the Barrymore Award-winning Kim Carson as the unlucky-in-love title character, who is set up on a blind date with an acerbic money-manager. What starts as a generous attempt at matchmaking by newlyweds Suzanna and Andrew quickly proves to be disastrous, both for the hopeful singles and their well-meaning friends. Hopeless romantics be warned: If you can’t stomach love with unconventionally witty twists and turns, stay home.

Feb. 1-25, $23-35, The Montgomery Theater, 124 Main St., Souderton, 215-723-9984, montgomerytheater.org.
