CURTAIN CALL: What's playing on indie stages this week

Between the Outgoing Tide's witty take on Alzheimer's, EgoPo's retelling of the myth of the golem and Brat Productions' gritty rock cabarets, Philly's stages are putting fresh spins on tired theatrical mores.

CURTAIN CALL: What's playing on indie stages this week

POSTED: Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 12:00 PM

Brat Productions has spent most of its 15-year history stripping theater away from staid traditions, and nothing makes that more evident than 2011-12’s Rock & Awe shows. Helmed by resident artist and frequent Brat collaborator Jess Conda, the series’ four installations rip back the slick finish that profit-driven Broadway has put on rock 'n' roll cabaret. This weekend’s installment, entitled “Let’s Start a War, chips at the overblown patina of, for example, Rock of Ages or the 2009 revival of Hair. Instead, Conda and director John Greebaum use the grittier satire-flecked punk  of the Dead Kennedys and Iggy Pop to create an atmosphere ripe for the examination of politics and class warfare.

March 29-31, RUBA Club-Studios, 416 Green St., 267-586-9093, bratproductions.org.
