CURTAIN CALL: What's playing on indie stages this week

Between the Outgoing Tide's witty take on Alzheimer's, EgoPo's retelling of the myth of the golem and Brat Productions' gritty rock cabarets, Philly's stages are putting fresh spins on tired theatrical mores.

CURTAIN CALL: What's playing on indie stages this week

POSTED: Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 12:00 PM

Their musicals seem hokey now, but musical writing duo Rodgers and Hammerstein were an innovative force back in their day. After triumphantly blending song, dance and story in Oklahoma!, the team refined its formula in the decidedly more depressing Carousel. Lovable though he may be, carousel barker Billy (local actor Michael Jansen) is a lousy bum of a male lead whose inability to provide for his family leads to his tragic suicide. The dark turn paves the way for a moralistic second act that, while slightly preachy and outdated, offers beautifully evocative moments in which Rodgers’ sweeping score shines.

Through April 22, $21-25, Villanova Theatre, 800 E. Lancaster Ave., 610-519-7474, villanovatheatre.org.
