CURTAIN CALL: What's playing on indie stages this week

Between the Outgoing Tide's witty take on Alzheimer's, EgoPo's retelling of the myth of the golem and Brat Productions' gritty rock cabarets, Philly's stages are putting fresh spins on tired theatrical mores.

CURTAIN CALL: What's playing on indie stages this week

POSTED: Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 12:00 PM

After its première in Chicago, local playwright Bruce Graham’s The Outgoing Tide drifts into Philly for its East Coast debut at Philadelphia Theatre Company. Set on the lapping shores of the Chesapeake Bay, Graham’s play follows the aging Gunner (Richard Poe, left), who's planning for his family’s future while his Alzheimer’s disease progresses. Between On Golden Pond, The Notebook and every damn season of Grey’s Anatomy, senility can feel like well-tread material, but Windy City reviewers said Graham infuses the action with dark humor to keep the show from feeling too somber. Philly stage staple Anthony Lawton (right) takes a break from performing solo to play Gunner’s adult son Jack.

Through April 22, $46-59, Suzanne Roberts Theatre, 480 S. Broad St., 215-985-0420, philadelphiatheatrecompany.org.
