CURTAIN CALL: The sexploits of beautiful people

POSTED: Tuesday, April 3, 2012, 11:00 AM

It’s been 15 years since How I Learned to Drive hit the New York stage, and by all accounts it remains just as disarming as it did on day one. Theatre Horizon’s production, which closes the suburban company’s 2011-12 season, should be no exception. Paula Vogel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama is a surprisingly soft portrayal of the relationship between a young woman (Christie Parker) and her sexually abusive uncle (Joe Guzman), who fondles her as he gives her driving lessons. As the adult protagonist revisits the shifting familial relationship, audiences are taken along on three discomforting rides. To Theatre Horizon’s credit, the company will supplement some of its performances with experts speaking on the residual effects of sexual abuse.

April 5-29, $22-29, Centre Theatre, 208 DeKalb St., Norristown, 610-283-2230, theatrehorizon.org.
