CURTAIN CALL: This one's for the ladies

POSTED: Tuesday, April 10, 2012, 11:00 AM

If it’s been a long journey for local scribe Davon Williams’ The Boy Who Sees, and it’s about to get longer. After taking the Philadelphia Urban Theatre Festival (PUTF) by storm in the fall, Nova D Arts Collective’s production of The Boy Who Sees will have a brief run in Philadelphia before crossing the pond to London. There, Williams’ drama will head to The Old Vic Theatre Company, which currently boasts Kevin Spacey as its artistic director.

Told in one act, The Boy Who Sees follows waitress Claire as she struggles to balance her personal desires with the duties of raising blind son James (Brett Gray, who won the PUTF’s Best Actor award). Her lover (Kash Goins) gives her financial help, but he can’t fulfill her emotional needs since he’s married. So when James’ father returns to win her back, Claire is forced to reevaluate her position in a shifting family dynamic. To add to his weighty examination of the issues, Williams breaks up scenes with introspective interpretive dance sequences that provide a glimpse into James’ mind.

April 11-29, $15-20, First Philadelphia Charter School, 4300 Tacony St., novadartscollective.com.
