Double Dare was a childhood staple for those of us who grew up in the late '80s and early '90s. We all wanted to catch pies in comically oversized pants and travel through a giant ear canal toward obstacle-course victory. But most of all, we wanted to be slimed. Children begged their parents to take them to Orlando just for a chance to come in contact with the unnaturally colored stuff.
Alas, none of us are immune to time, and as we grew older slime became a dated obsession. Still, many of us never lost our attachment to messy, slapstick entertainment. The managers of Frankford Hall understood this and organized a beer-themed version of our favorite childhood game show for Philly Beer Week. They dubbed it "Dunkel Dare" and convinced the man, the myth and the legend Marc Summers to host.
Summers might be the greatest game show host that has ever lived. His jovial demeanor and charismatic quips make him a natural entertainer, but his ability to have fun with his audience makes him one of the best. During his run on Double Dare, Summers looked like he enjoyed being on stage as much as his contestants. This is a remarkable feat when you consider that he hosted the messiest show ever while suffering from OCD.
Summers kept his sunny disposition last night, frequently bantering with the audience and lifting his glass for a toast. When some goober accidentally knocked over his beer, he simply shrugged it off and intoned, “Get Summers another beer.” Marc Summers doesn’t even like beer; he just gets down like that.
Representatives from Yards and Sly Fox Brewing companies battled each other in a competition that mimicked the show. There was an opening event where players tossed sponges into a container on a teammate’s head. Yards won and received the first set of questions.
We all know how this works: A team receives a question they can either answer or dare the other team to answer. Once dared, the point value for the question is doubled and the second team can … alright, forget this. Let’s be real, no one watched Double Dare for the questions. When I was a kid, I didn’t know or care what the small squares of glass used in mosaic patterns are called. I’m older now, but I still don’t care about trivia when the alternative is watching grown men fall on their asses.
The large audience shared the same feelings and applauded loudly when physical challenges were announced. Team members attempted to smash airborne eggs using cymbals, balance balls on plungers and shoot rubber duckies with water guns.
The game came down to the final round, which consisted of rapid-fire questions from Summers. In the end, Yards Brewing Company won by a mere $50. They will advance to Thursday night’s championship to face whoever wins tonight’s event.
Dunkel Dare deviated from Double Dare in several significant ways. There was neither slime nor an obstacle course and Marc Summers dropped more f-bombs and naughty references than I remember him using on the kids' show. Still, it was a blast to finally live the childhood dream of attending Double Dare, even if it was a bit different than I remember.
