GET MONEY: The annual Knight Arts Challenge is back!

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has returned to play fairy godmother to eager  Philadelphia artists. The third annual Knight Arts Challenge is currently seeking people with art-related ideas that will effectively engage Philadelphia’s communities.

The purpose of the challenge is to provide resources to anyone — from independent artists to established arts institutions — and to encourage the concept that great ideas can start anywhere. The application process is simple: a 150-word essay explaining how you plan to use art to enrich the Philadelphia experience. Those with the best ideas will be rewarded project-starting funds.

In the challenge’s first year, the Knight Foundation awarded $2.7 million to 36 winners. One recipient (out of a record-setting 1,752 applications) was Darla Jackson (pictured), who had an idea for a Philadelphia sculpture gym that provided local sculptors a safe space to create their works. This enabled artists to use heavy-duty tools, have storage space and get one-on-one help with their projects.

It may sound too good to be true, but all you have to do is fill out a quick application for a chance to get your hands on some of that dough. Just keep these four points in mind when whipping up your proposal:

  1. The idea must be about the arts
  2. The project must take place in or benefit Philadelphia
  3. Recipients must raise enough funds to match the Knight grant within the first year
  4. THE DEADLINE IS OCT. 31

Good luck, and try to remember us when you make it big!
