✚ Woodmere Hay Maze by Cassie Owens

Hoping to place family fun in an art installation, event organizers at Woodmere Art Museum put a call out for designers to send ideas for their second annual hay maze. The museum selected “Owl’s Eye,” a design from local architect Peter Brown that was inspired by sacred ruins throughout time. Next week, the 900-bale hay labyrinth will receive a Halloween makeover, offering special events inside. On Fri., Oct. 28, join in on ghost stories and mask making. On Sun., Oct. 30, bring the kids for early trick-or-treat. Weekends through Oct. 30, $6-$20, Woodmere Art Museum, 9201 Germantown Ave., 215-247-0476 woodmereartmuseum.org.

✚ A Reading of Stoker’s Dracula by Brian Wilensky

The vampire community has had tons of film, TV and literature adaptations of their beloved count. But how many times has Bram Stoker’s Dracula been portrayed as a one-man show? Philly actor Josh Hitchens will take on 14 different characters as he acts out Stoker’s classic in this 75-minute reading — all while sticking as much to the original text as he can. Thu., Oct. 27, 6 p.m., $10, Rosenbach Museum and Library, 2008 Delancey Place, 215-732-1600, rosenbach.org.

✚ Terror Film Festival by Chris Brown
There's no rule that says Halloween has to be spent in an ill-fitting, poorly conceived costume while standing elbow to elbow at a bar. With that in mind, consider the sixth annual Terror Film Festival, featuring three days of more than two dozen spooky that run the gamut from gore and horror to artsy noir thrillers. The most promising entry? The thirty-minute An Evening with my Comatose Mother. The most frightening? The Fields, starring Tara Reid and Cloris Leachman. Thu.-Sun., Oct. 27-29, various times, $7-20, Ethical Society Building, 1906 S. Rittenhouse Square, terrorfilmfestival.net.

✚ Eight-Legged Freaks Screening by Massimo Pulcini
They’re creepy, they’re crawly and — most of all — they’re corny. To coincide with Halloween and its new exhibit, “Bugs … Outside the Box,” The Academy of Natural Science presents Eight-Legged Freaks, the latest in their “Mega-Bad Movie Night” series. In true Halloween fashion, feel free to show up dressed in your most “mega-bad,” or “mega-awesome” costume — group costumes are welcome, too. Then, grab a bite to eat and enjoy the radioactive arachnoids that reign terror on David Arquette and company in this awesomely awful flick from 2002, while The Academy’s own insect experts provide commentary on the arthropod absurdity unfolding on-screen. Thu., Oct. 27, 7 p.m., $15, The Academy of Natural Sciences, 1900 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, 215-299-1000, ansp.org.
