ICE CUBES: Diplo, Blanka, Man Man and no Vin Diesel
When you attend the opening of In the Next Room (or the vibrator play) this week at the Wilma, I suggest that you stop in the lobby and peruse the collection of vintage sex objects on loan from Sexploratorium, part of Passional Boutique, for the run of the show. Or until someone nabs them for a personal party.

I heard that you were sad that the DayGlow mega-rave at the Naval Yard on April 16 with Roger Sanchez had sold out. Their paint party suddenly became your pity party. Well, I spoke to the promoters and they just put up another date on another day April 15, and brought in Philly’s own Wes Pentz better known as Diplo. He sold out their DayGlow in Puerto Rico with 6,000 audience members and is sure to fill Philly’s 3,500. Rumor has it that if you guys sell it out, this may not be the last time you see and hear a DayGlow in Philly in 2011. Saying…
Sad partings: Tenley Gwen Bank has left Theatre Exile and her external relations director position. For now, Clara Elser, Exile’s administrative assistant and box office guru will hold the gig. Bank will be back to help out with the end-of-season fundraiser Cabaret of the Exiled. Currently TE’s brilliant dark comedy The Lieutenant of Inishmore is at Plays & Players and all I can say is watch out for the cat blood.
Welcome hellooooos go out to two new cats at the Wells Fargo Center: Tim Murphy is the new regional VP and Matthew Homan is the facility’s new general manager. Ask him what makes so much sense about a Rod Stewart/Stevie Nicks double bill.
Smaller than a farmers’ market but bigger than a tool box: it’s the Farmers’ Cabinet from husband-and-wife team Matt and Colleen Swartz with Matt Scheller on 11th and Walnut. It’ll look like Victorian-era bar room and serve it up rustic American. Plus, writes, their PR lady Jennie Hatton, it’ll hold a “nano-brewery, a tiny, two barrel system — a first for the city and beyond." The name comes from a Philadelphia-area publication dating back to 1803, The Farmers’ Cabinet. Get out. Sounds like it’ll open in March.
On the Water, the wonky multi-man off shoot of Philly’s art mobbing Da Comrade!, is having a house party at 5034 Spruce on March 11. Thom McCarthy brings the wine. Sgt. Dunbar brings the cheese. This leaves Hopalong to make ambrosia for the occasion. On the Water just recorded its debut with Radio Eris’ Matt Stevenson producing. More news on the Water soon.
The new edition of the Weekly Press alerts readers to the dangers of privatization and gentrification along the cozy historical streets of Jessup and Irving streets. Ladies and gents meet Philly’s latest scourge — the Navarros. Thanks for the heads up Weekly Press.
WHOWHATWHERE: The Wilma’s Blanka Zizka took time off from directing that vibrator play I mentioned above to go catch John Zorn playing the pipe organ at Christ Church for the finale of the Blindspot festival. Before ex-Floetry member (from Philly, yo) Marsha Ambrosius’ solo debut Late Nights & Early Mornings, enters at #1 on Billboard’s R&B Albums chart and #2 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart this week, she hung out at 32 Degrees, pretty much on her cell phone the entire time. Know who else was pre-occupied? Taylor Momsen. The Gossip Girl-Pretty Reckless leader took forever to get on stage because according the peeps backstage, she was too bust reapplying eye shadow and mascara and smoking cigarette after cigarette. Sounds like me. Does anybody care why Vin Diesel didn’’t make last week’s Red Ball? I caught wind of a note that read “Our primary contact to Vin Diesel was unable to deliver on his promises.” Dag. Who is the goof who promised they’d get Diesel? We’re sure nothing like that could happen this Friday, March 11, as Spike Lee and poet Sonia Sanchez will be honored at the African American Musuem of Philadelphia's 35th annual Heritage Gala at the Downtown Marriott. (215-574-0380 ext. 246, aampmuseum.org).
1999 called. Not only did Philly’s art snobby (a compliment) Caterpillar drop an eponymous new CD in the last few weeks. Philly’s The Bigger Lovers release a tenth anniversary reissue of How I Learned to Stop Worrying and play a reunion show at Johnny Brenda’s March 12, their first since 2005.
Steven Cook and Michael Solomonov. You know them and love them from Zahav and Percy St. Barbecue. Now they’ll join with BODHi Coffee owners Thomas Henneman and Bob Logue and food writer Felicia D’Ambrosio for chicken and donuts ay Federal Donuts on S. Second. Next up, Jose Garces and I will team for a southern fried spaghetti warehouse — Pasta Grits. Saying.
The constantly-Icepack-ed Damon Feldman of Celebrity Boxing fame got tagged by then-Attorney General (now governor) Tom Corbett in April 1010 and charged with fixing (pillow) fights with celebs who couldn’t hit rock bottom if they were aiming for it and promoting fights without a license. Point is, they were a gooof and everybody knew. But Corbett nabbed Feldman and he got sentenced to two years' probation after pleading no contest. Damon can no promote any boxing events in Pennsylvania for two years. You haven’t seen the last of him I'm sure/I hope. He will probably promote tickle fests or Jello slapping matches or pudding pushing bouts.
Your favorite emporium of lion mugs and tie gear Ten Thousand Villages on 10th and Walnut, ain’t closing on March 13. Just renovating. Should reopen March 19 so stay calm.
We seeing that May 10 is the Anti label release date for Life Fantastic, the new thing from Philly’s hottest mess Man Man, the first album since 2008's Rabbit Habits and one mega-mixed by Bright Eyes’ Mike Mogis with fellow Eyes member Nate Walcott doing string arrangements. Huh?
The annual College of Physicians of Philadelphia Masquerade Ball at the Mutter Museum — this year to celebrate the 200th birthday of Dr. Thomas Dent Mutter — happens on March 11 and I beg of you to go. Not only will there be alchemical cocktails and dance lessons so to prance to the Tony Micelli/Larry McKenna Jazz Band, J Nathan Bazzel, the College’s director of communications, promises an elaborate 200th b-day cake with “confectionary inspirations” from Dr. Mutter’s collection,” The cake is being designed by Chad Durkin of Exton-based Desserts International. My guess is consider the place and watch for chocolate umbilical cords and strawberry spleens.
