ICE PACK ILLUSTRATED: Morton Feldman, King Britt, Sickidz and more
Back in March, after his concert at First Christ Church with John Zorn at the organ, Bowerbird's Dustin Hurt told me a secret, that the next B-bird series would be dedicated to Morton Feldman, adventurous experimental composer. That time is now. Hurt's otherworldly American Sublime series runs June 4-12, features the crème of the avant-garde in Joan LaBarbara, the Either/Or ensemble and Marilyn Nonken, with the highlight being a rare performance of Feldman's six-hour String Quartet No. 2, which concludes the fest at the Philadelphia Episcopal Cathedral on June 12.

Speaking of otherworldly, King Britt just sent me this message: “The light at the end of the tunnel is not an illusion… the tunnel is” and this “Firefly” music that he produced, engineered, composed and mixed. Download it. Spooky.
The Keswick Theatre hosts a fundraiser on June 5 for the Philadelphia Folksong Society as the starter event for this August’s 50th Philadelphia Folk Festival. Who’s playing? Only the godfather of flat-picking guitar Doc Watson with David Holt and Tony Trischka.
Hey neighbors with money. South Street’s Jamaican Jerk Hut is allowed to have live music outdoors again after a long battle in the courts that stated that the Hut’s lovely lolling reggae grooves bucked up against your precious vows of near-silence. Ha. You can stuff all your lawyer fees right up your ass. I’ll be there every Friday and Saturday starting at 6 p.m. banging pots. Sue me.
Hey, further up the road apiece from the Hut at Tritone on June 4 is Dixy Blood, the new country music project form Philly punk classicists from The Sickidz. Starring Mick Cancer as “Clarence,” Nurse Betty Gee as “BettyLou,” Joe as “MoeJo” and Rockin’ Richie Lustre as himself, the whole project has a cinematic Southern gothic feel to go with its hooting honky-tonk vibe. “I like to think of Dixy Blood as a local two-bit quartet comprised of some rebellious refugees from the last burnt-out honky-tonkin’ town,” says Lustre, fresh from a rapturous rave-up at Molly’s Books and Records. “Gleefully exposing the questionable virtues of the hardwood lifestyle, this so-called country combo emphatically emphasize that this ain’t your daddy’s line dance. This decidedly doomsday vision of country’s darker doorway comes from rakish raconteurs who insist that its music is not for the faint of heart.” Dixy Blood is joined by Dan Balcer’s Bookie Witch and Broken Prayers.
When you see the premiere of TLC’s NY Ink this week (June 2, 10 p.m.) see if you recognize Suzanne Park. The Philly native now lives in Manhattan where she is a make up artist and massage therapist. On the TLC network work Park shows off the work of tat artist Tommy Montoya from East LA., a specialist in black and gray ink work. “I have Jimi Hendrix with wings immortalized on my shoulder and halfway down my arm ’cuz he’s my guardian angel,” says Park. “Now I want more.” If you want more, the shop is located on 43 Wooster St. in SoHo and is called Wooster St. Social Club. You can look up a sneak peek tour of Tat place here . “I am on the sneak peek sitting in the chair, much to my surprise,” says Park.
Somebody hug Richie Wolff and congratulate him. While he and his partner in Philly’s Breaking Glass Pictures Richard Ross were at Cannes, they won the North American rights to Laure Charpentier’s controversial free spirited drama Gigola about Paris in the psychedelic ’60s.
Talking about sexy psych music, Philly’s 58 Fury, currently putting the finishing touches on an EP expected to be completed in autumn, has a show at Dawson Street Pub on June 4 at 100 Dawson Street with Zymotic Flow.
Boardwalk Empire author Nelson Johnson is the keynote speaker at the 62nd annual Philadelphia Writers’ Conference, June 3-5 at the Holiday Inn on Fourth and Arch. The three-day event features a lot of short-story, nonfiction and memoir workshops so the First Person Slam crowd will crow. Area columnist Solomon Jones opens the whole she-bang. More info.
The Spice Corner in the Ninth Street Market knows music, like guitarist Tonio Montoya. Plus Rick Iannacone is an ex-employee who pops up there during the holidays. Now on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. Jerome Ziets and his pal Ken Parker — Kenny & Jerry — show up with their mandolins, guitars and violins and play sweet early music, Southern soul and bluegrass. Sometimes, they are joined by Ted Estersohn, a Wild Bohemian who has a new bottleneck bluesy CD, Root and Branch. http://wavechair.com/ My wife Glamorosi has been telling me about these cats since they played down the street in front of Esposito’s, so it was nice finally catching up to the stringed wonders.
WHOWHATWHERE: Katie Cazorla, entrepreneur and owner of Hollywood’s The Painted Nail, is soon to be the star of the TV Guide Network’s original reality series Nail Files. The show is from the producers of Jersey Shore and it premieres June 21. Along with stopping at the Sofitel and in AC with her Nail Files Mobile truck, Cazorla hit Tony Luke’s where she met up with sandwich king/actor Tony Luke Jr. and disco singing sensation John Costa. Back in AC, Oh My Godard Gallery at the Pier Shops at Caesars hosted artists Jim and Kathleen Keifer to benefit Gilda’s Club South Jersey Noogieland, a support program for children living with cancer. The Keifers are internationally renown board game artists. Still, in AC and still at Caesars, Benji and Joel Madden from Good Charlotte were spied doing DJ set at Dusk. And in Philly — oy — we saw Sarah Palin making a pitstop on the One Nation Bus Tour at the Liberty Bell.
