ICE PACK ILLUSTRATED: Peace Creeps, Jersey Shore, American Babies, new Jose Garces spots and the mysterious Sir Benjamin

That Dancin' On Air marathon that aired on WPHL Channel 17 last Saturday was #1 in the 18-49 demos for that night in the Philly viewing area. The only TV show that beat the it was Saturday Night Live. Is that good? Maybe. Then again, what re-run did SNL broadcast? And how far off is a Dance Party USA run?

ICE PACK ILLUSTRATED: Peace Creeps, Jersey Shore, American Babies, new Jose Garces spots and the mysterious Sir Benjamin

You have until July 31 to send Sue Golden of Stiletto Shoes fame (18th and Sansom) video footage of yourself being a workout addict. She’s casting gals and guys for a reality show called Gym Ratsz. Hit gymratsz.com for submission info.

After this Sunday’s brunch, Gardenia at the Philadelphia Art Alliance will close so to ready its new dining concept this fall from the same folk you love at Restaurant Associates. No chef is named as of yet but the culinary ideal will be cas-u-al. and re-designed by Elizabeth Knapp of Knapp Interiors who did Xochitl, Percy Street Barbecue and Zahav.

On Aug. 3, poetess Ursula Rucker and guitarist Tim Motzer kick off Street Movies!, a week of Scribe Film events at Fotterall Square at N. 11th and W. York. Hit up scribe.org for info.

Amongst the dozens of new venues that open weekly, count in AUX, which is the new performance space aside Vox Populi Gallery. Opening night is July 29 and look for the folk from Little Berlin, Bodega and Tiger Strikes Asteroid to show and tell.

Remember a few weeks ago when we Ice Cubed the fact that Brandy Hartley was leaving her longtime production/promotion role at Johnny Brenda’s after five+ years? Well, she wrote me from vacation with her family to say that she was offered and accepted a job at Ticketfly in San Francisco, an event ticketing platform that provide integrated online services for music venues, festivals, and promoters. “I just received a Masters degree in Information Science from the Rutgers University School of Communication and Information and the job is a great blend of my professional experience at Johnny Brenda’s and my academic training at Rutgers,” says Hartley. “It’s a perfect mix of music, technology, and e-commerce.” Eeee.

I’ll have more on this as I get it, but I’m hearing that the crew of Sugar Rush on the Food Network made a pit stop at The Rim in the Italian Market and filmed bits of it for an Aug. 8 airing. If you see The Rim’s mysterious owner Rene at the Ninth Street Festival on Sun., July 31, ask him. And check out the Barajagala Tribal Bellydance outside.

Tom Hamilton started American Babies as a reaction to the musical situation he was in at the time: electro pop, Brothers Past, you know the drill. “I wanted to get back to the basics of songwriting and recording, to get away from the crutch of sequencers and synths,” says Hamilton. “But being in a band can be political and requires a lot of compromise which doesn’t always lead to artistic fulfillment.” Yet he didn’t want to be another singer-songwriter either so he decided to start a band. “But be the only constant member. Problem solved.” American Babies is that one-man-band+. Flawed Logic is its recorded debut. And the Babies throw out the bathwater, the Logic and lyrics about economic meltdowns and political powder kegs at the Blockley July 30 with The Great Unknown in tow.

Did you know that there’s a sign at the Race Street Pier that reads “No Fishing”? Apparently the new ruling comes at the expense of serious fisherpeeps but, from the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation’s POV, it’s due to messy behavior from a number of casual casters. Get off of my bass.

There’s a certain Sir Benjamin Quintet doing lounge rock and not-Tex-or-Mex pop in the Jersey/Philly area in the next two weeks. You’ll have to guess who that is.

The last time we looked in on ex-A’s singer and lyricist Richard Bush, he was hanging with The Hooters and making noise as part of David U’s cover-tune project benefiting Settlement Music School. This weekend though, Bush is back to his old new band Peace Creeps and holding its new eponymous CD’s release party July 30 at the Tin Angel. Go do that.

The same little bird who gave me the Jose Garces info in Icepack in print about the Letto Deli delay (between late fall and early 2012) and the Scotsdale AZ operations says now that the Revel Casino folk of Atlantic City, NJ may may be welcoming three Garces spaces to their fold, a bigger take on Village Whiskey, a smaller version of Distrito and an Amada. Nothing definite.

WHOWHATWHERE: Big deal for Jersey Shore fans: this was the last week that the crew you’ve grown to… I dunno, really… will have worked at The Shore Store. No more selling t-shirts for J-WOWW and The Situation. Parting. Sweet sorrow. The whole bit, I suppose. We also got shots of DeenaJerseyShore baring her panties, so yay that. Will Smith was spotted in Philly at several Charlie Mack Party 4 Peace Weekend events — a competition at the Yesha Fellowship Hall at 23rd and Snyder and the screening of the Mack-produced Streets staering One Life to Live actress Nafessa Williams at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre. Skylar Grey hit Q102 studios in Bala Cynwyd. She’s the girl that does the sweet song parts in Diddy and Eminem songs. Punky spunky Simple Plan visited the Q studio as well. The less-than-punk, but no less swell soul man Brian McNight did a meet and greet at WDAS in Bala Cynwyd. And on the sleek R&B tip, Rihanna’s gig at Wells Fargo Center got visits from M. Night Shyamalan and his family who met the redhead backstage and from porn star Gina Lynn. Hey ladies.
