ICE PACK ILLUSTRATED: T.A. Flannery's reboots, Sheen bores, Amoroso's loses dough, Major Lazor does Beyonce and a Cinefest sells out
Last Saturday, nightlife impresario David Carroll had a birthday party at T.A. Flannery's on S. 21st Street, right down the block from Medusa, with restaurateurs Larry Cohen and Barry Gutin, designer/realtor Michelle Ashley, Bar Noir alumnus Bobby Startup and new cookbook author Hope Cohen in tow). Why it was held at that tap room-y location has everything to do with a secret I've been sworn to since last year. Carroll along with a rogue's gallery of other night-lifers (Justin Fine, Anthony Sembello, more) have taken over the spot and are turning it into a dark woodsy nightspot - sexy but low-key - that should be open by May's end. Food and DJs should be part of the act.

April 21 is a good day to get your drink on if you’re in a charitable mood. The Variety Club of Philly’s young wing is holding a benefit at Public House with celebrity bartenders like Winston Justice (Eagles), Mike Jerrick (Fox29) and Amber Joy Watkins (Miss Pennsylvania USA 2011) in tow. Hit it up here: varietyphila.org/events/details/young-varietys-celebrity-bartenders-night1.
Ever since I was in grade school I had to deal with the Amoroso bread dynasty. Unwanted associations and bad jokes came daily. “Hey do you make Amoroso’s dough?” “Hey, how’s the roll hanging?” That sort of cornball stuff. It’s not my name, so don’t associate or blame me for Len Amoroso laying off drivers at its SouthWest Philly bakery (telling them to buy the route or lose the routes). Worst yet, Amoroso may perhaps shutter its 55th and Baltimore bakery which would land all Amoroso bread operations at its plant in Vineland, NJ. Buy your bread at Sarcone’s instead and tell them A.D. AMOROSI with an “I” (not an “O”) sent you.
John Gilmour’s metal machine music-filled Acidfinger takes over the Triangle Tavern at 10th and Reed on April 23 for a free show with The Blessed Mothers; they’ll be filming the event for a video. But he has one question for his big screen moment. “I got a Wonder Woman outfit for the occasion,” states Gilmour. “What do you think should go under the miniskirt? Man-thong tighty-whitey or going born free?” Hit the Triangle for his decision.
“Girls (Who Run the World)” is the new track from Beyoncé and scheduled to be on her new CD in June. Why should Philly care? It’s co-produced by Major Lazer — which means Diplo and Switch — and samples the good Major’s “Pon De Floor.” You could stream it from that bastion of hip, Huffington Post.
The Institute of Contemporary Arts at UPenn opens its “That’s How We Escaped: Reflections on Warhol” on April 21 in celebration of the night that Andy, Edie Sedgwick and his Factory crew took over the ICA in October 1965 (then part of the Fisher Fine Arts Library) and basically turned himself and Pop Art into a cause celebre. Alex Da Corte re-conceptualizes the staircase where Warhol and his entourage escaped from the swelling crowd, and the original Campbell’s Soup invitation, a Campbell’s Soup can signed by Warhol, an S&H Green Stamps invitation, and an S&H Green Stamps blouse will be on display.
Cinefest godhead Thom Cardwell reports that a big number of its 2011 flick festival sold out. There were dual sold-out opening night films, like Exporting Raymond, a documentary from Phil Rosenthal, the creator of Everybody Loves Raymond, about his escapades in trying to produce a Russian version. (His connection to Philadelphia is his actress/wife Monica Horan, a native daughter, who also appeared in the TV show in the role of Amy MacDougall-Barone). The Catechism Cataclysm, directed by Todd Rohal, and starring Eastbound and Down’s Steve Little, also in attendance, sold out. Potiche starring Catherine Deneuve and Gerard Depardieu had a full-house of cinephile Francophiles at the Ritz East. Local director Sean Kirkpatrick and local producer Edward J. Eberwine III’s shot-entirely-in-Philadelphia, Cost of a Soul, sold out two houses at the Ritz East. (It opens wide on 50 screens nationwide starting May 20.) The Festival of Independents’ Calendar Girl shot in Philly by debut director Derek Lindeman, and produced by Philadelphia native son Tommy Avallone (nephew of Frankie Avalon) sold out. It’s almost harder to find what didn’t sell out.
Mural Arts director Jane Golden leads the charge toward Earthcare Week when she hits Kimpton’s Party for the Parks bash at Hotel Palomar on April 21 for a happy hour soiree.
The frosted glass is up at Fare at 2032 Fairmount with its simple but elegant bar and restaurant space clearly separated from each other. The newly built “organic kitchen” space should be ready to go by June is what I’m hearing.
The Sandy Sprint 5K in support of ovarian cancer research and the Canine Sprint are happening at the same time this year — April 23. Dogs get bandanas and poop bags. You can get them too if you think you’ll need them. The whole she-bang starts 7 AM at the Please Touch Museum in Fairmount Park.
WHOWHATWHERE: Philly-raised stand-up comic Kevin Hart is at Community College of Philadelphia. Sure he studied there for a minute but now he’s filming a one-man-show called Laugh at my Pain at the College. Word has it that South Street’s Laff House is another location where Hart might film. Charlie Sheen did his bit to half a house at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. Apparently, he got his biggest applause when he showed off his Phillies shirt. Know what’s funny — I was in AC on Saturday night and heard not one bit of buzz on the Sheen show. I heard more about Kathy Griffin being at the Borgata and hanging out with Queer Eye style maven Carson Kressley at the Borgata’s Mixx club. While Griffin was spotted at the Sunroom at the Water Club, Kressley hit Ricky Martin’s concert at the Borgata and had breakfast at Teplitzky’s at the Chelsea Hotel on Saturday. How much did Kressley love his western omelet with wheat toast? He came back on Sunday, ate, and made nice with the restaurant’s staff. Ex-Eagle Donovan McNabb hit Zee Bar hard last weekend. Ouch. This was after he hung at Virtua Hospital in Voorhees, NJ which named a wing for the QB and his family. Countess LuAnn de Lesseps, my favorite Real Housewives of New York now that Bethheny is gone, hung out and signed copies of her book Class with the Countess: How to Live with Elegance and Flair at Jewelbilee at the Metroplex in Plymouth Meeting last weekend.
