ICE PACK ILLUSTRATED: Videos from Bells, Busses and Enemies, Bobbi Booker speaks up, Jen Carroll goes biking, Jersey Shore ends it all and movie theaters with menus.
It's not the first time this move has been rumored but it might be the last: CBS Radio might finally turn WYSP 94 into the FM home for 610 WIP Sportsradio by Labor Day like its been yakking about since pigs had skin. Dan Gross reported this Tuesday at Philly.com. BUT, as I mentioned, this chatter about dumping music for gridirons and zambonis has been heard before. Sports outperform rock every time even though rock does indeed beat scissors.

After his gig with Many Arms at Johnny Brenda’s where he opened for Bardo Pond and William Hooker’s string quartet, drummer Ricardo Lagomasino has a tiny slew (a tlew?) of gigs in August including tonight’s house party at 4945 Hazel where he plays under the nom de drum The Sea Around Us. On Aug. 17, he’ll play as part of the RL3 trio with guitarist Al Ens and bassist Matt Stein at Highwire Gallery. On Aug. 18, his Lagomasino/Fishkin duo with the saxophonist David hits Vox Populi. And Aug. 19 finds Lagomasino’s Tongue Sculptors at Danger Danger Gallery.

When I ran into Philadelphia Tribune scribe Bobbi Booker at the Kimmel Center’s Paris soiree, she was on a mad dash between floors. Why? She was due to discuss the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists “Philly LOVE” Party that’s coming on Aug. 5. “Now, I don’t have to underscore how significant this is for a group of reporters to score both the E. Factory and the talent of this ilk,” says Booker of DJ Questlove of The Roots, poetess Sonia Sanchez, Kindred the Family Soul and DJ Diamond Kuts playing Electric Factory this Friday. “It’s gonna be a stone-cold blast.”
If you haven’t been paying attention — and shame on you if you haven’t — Brat Productions has made New Paradise Laboratory rat Lee Ann Etzold an interim co-artistic director with Madi Distefano in the wake of Michael Alltop’s departure.
The local indie kids like the videos they do. Philly’s soft-psych Busses lensed a video for their hummable “Liar” that you can see here and here before you see them at S. 21st Street’s Rogue’s Gallery tonight for free. “Night of the Living Dead,” Steve Perrong’s new video from Conversations with Enemies can be seen here with kids and adult zombies in tow. Or you can see the Enemies at World Café Live Aug. 11 without the children. Bells Bells Bells’ video for the song “Housekeeping by the Lake” inspired by Marilyn Robinson’s 1980 novel Housekeeping, can be seen here. We’ll find a live date for the triple B soon.
Anyone who remembers Icepack two weeks ago will remember I stated that one of Chef Jose Garces’ next moves for additional locations would be Scottsdale, AZ. Turns out that means being named executive chef in charge of food and beverage at The Drinkwater, a boutique hotel. There he’ll open a Distrito and a Garces Trading Company.
It’s a movie theater and a diner all rolled into one now that Movie Tavern opened in the Providence Town Center on Market Street in Collegeville, PA. That’s where you get an individual dining tray at your seat and can watch Crazy Stupid Love while noshing on crazy stupid chicken or have a burger with Cowboys & Aliens.
The Ace of Cakes’ ace of cakes, Duff Goldman from Food Network shot some bits of his new show Sugar High in Philly in June where he hit The Rim Café in the Italian Market (he tried the Volcano drink), the Sugar Philly lunch truck (dug the macaroons) and the NoLibs fave Brown Betty Dessert Boutique where he made a rice pudding stop. The show starts Aug. 8 at 10:30 p.m. and is scheduled to preview The Rim’s shot.
WHOWHATWHERE: During last week’s Imelda May/Wanda Jackson rockabilly filly show at the Troc, Ms. May gave a hoot and a holler to Bill Haley’s guitarist, Johnny Kay, in the audience. The night before actor Jason Lee took part in the LifeRide/AmFAR AIDS charity ride that started at Kiehl’s on 18th and Walnut, he took part in a big steak at the Rittenhouse’s Smith & Wollensky outpost. 10 Arts’ Top Chef Jennifer Carroll was the event’s host with Chris Salgardo (president of Kiehl’s USA) and supermodel Tyson Beckford along for the ride. No sooner than she opened for Britney Spears at the Wells Fargo Center, Nicki Minaj hit the BET Young Stars show at the TLA where Tyga was on the bill. Before they hit Kung Fu Necktie, Viva Brother did a tiny Radio 104.5 set. The Kooks also did a set there as well during a press stop. New Kids on the Block Jordan and Jonathan Knight were spotted heading into haircuts at Bubbles Salon at 16th Walnut on the same afternoon they played Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall. Lil Wayne discovery Porcelain Black stopped at Q102 where she talked up her single “That’s What Rock & Roll Looks Like.” Ex-76er Charles Barkley was spied at the bar of a kitchen inside the AKA Rittenhouse last weekend. Hope he had the squab. The kids from Jersey Shore bid a fond adieu, kind-of, to the Seaside Heights house they were staying in. Famously, after five seasons, this cast of guidos and guidettess is gonegonegone. Ah, Snooki we hardly knew ye. Wait. Really? And two of the originators of the South Philly music scene, Jerry Blavat and my dad Alfonso Amorosi, reunited after having not seen each other for some 60 years at the Geator’s Free Library appearance on Monday. The two lived doors away from each when Blavat was born and my dad was a yon teen.
