Curious about high concert ticket prices? Ticket Masters: The Rise of the Concert Industry and How the Public Got Scalped is for you. It’s at Drexel U’s Mitchell Auditorium in the Bossone Research Center (3140 Market St.) Nov. 17, 7 p.m. They’ll hold a scholarly panel discussion on the evolution of pricey concert ticketing with Tom Moon (ex-Philadelphia Inquirer music columnist who never had to pay for a ticket in his life hahaha), R5’s Sean Agnew, Josh Baron, co-author of the hot new book Ticket Masters and an editor at Relix, David Cooper, founder of Pearl Jam tour ticketing, and Jim McCafferty, ticketing director of The Mann. No guest list. Sike. It’s free.
Sarah Van Aken of Van Aken sustainable material custom design just started designing and manufacturing uniforms for the newly opened likes of Il Pittore (long white apron with draw strings, red stitching and signature initials) and Sbraga (long green aprons with satin twill ties and drawn tree branches) amongst other local restaurants. Why shouldn’t Van Aken have someone to rep her brand? Now she does. Top Chef’s Jennifer Carroll — late of 10 Arts — is the new (and first) Van Aken Signature Brand Ambassador. Carroll will talk up Van Aken’s specialty uniform program while Sarah custom designs a Jennifer Carroll by Van Aken custom chef coat and apron. Surely a Jen Carroll doll is next.
Speaking of some of the above, we know every one is too thrilled that the long discussed new Stephen Starr fish spot Route 6 on North Broad is opening Nov. 18 (just changed from its original Nov. 17 date). But what about that old old Starr restaurant with partner/chef Chris Painter — Il Pittore of Sansom Street — that opened, what, 10 days ago? If you haven’t been, the delectably austere classic white linen spot still has a rustic feel (love the open natural light of the front window on the second floor as well as the skylight) There’s a towering wine list of course of which I believe I tried seven or so. Slurp. And Painter’s cuisine — elegant and epic. Above all else, I dug the handmade duck angelloti pasta, the herb-crusted chicken with chicken sausage wrapped in cabbage (just enough mustard and fennel), the slow roasting suckling piggy and the potted foie gras served with herbed pizelles and Lambrusco and Prosecco jellies. Num num num num.
Speaking of rustic and not elegant (that’s fine): Grubstake, Paddy Wax McHugh’s accordion-fueled pub-punk cabaret act (think Pogues meet Black Lips) has a new album Anyhow that gets a release bash at Tritone Nov. 18. For those of you unfamiliar with McHugh, he’s a deliciously gnarly storyteller and a brusque singer and the Grubbies are always up for a damn rough good bad time as the groove drifts from skiffle country swing to pounding rawk out. Go man go.
While The Roots announced preview dates for their upcoming concept album undun (Def Jam in December) at NYC’s Highline Ballroom on Nov. 29 and 30, and Dec. 5, its Twitter mad drummer ?uestlove made the news for Tweet-alerting Occupy Wall Street protestors that the cops of Manhattan were headed to Zuccotti Park in riot gear. “Omg, driven down south st near #ows. Somethin bout to go down yo, swear I counted 1000 riot gear cops bout to pull sneak attack #carefulyall” Between his nearly 2 million followers and their followers and re-tweets, some of Tuesday night’s Occupiers got out unscathed. Rolling Stone’s dot.com has the tale plus a fun photo of ?uesto DJing at a Mitchell & Ness party in Philly.
Remember that Roots mural planned for 2012? Well, Philly’s Mural Arts is tapping Mt. Airy’s Art Garage for what they’re calling a series of Community Paint Days to complete three new public murals in the city’s Northwest section where very few murals exist. How dare Germantown, Mt. Airy, and Chestnut Hill not have murals (shades of Seinfeld and “you must wear the ribbon” come to mind). The first meeting for the Germantown mural is Nov. 21 at 5534-36 Pulaski Ave. Wear the ribbon.
When the Jersey Boys opens its newest national tour (its second since Broadway) they’ll do so in Philly (Dec. 6 at the Forrest, tickets are on sale now, buy now, last year’s engagement holds the record for the highest weekly gross ever at the Forrest) and with Philadelphia-area native Brandon Andrus as “Nick Massi.” Dooo waaahhhh.
WHOWHATWHERE: Saw Sampan/Izakaya exec chef/CEO Michael Schulson at Savor Borgata Atlantic City inside the Borgata Event Center over the weekend. Marc Vetri, Wolfgang Puck and Tony Luke were also in attendance. That’s where we heard about Schulson’s plans for 2012 — a thing called St. James Place that’ll open in Suburban Square in the spring with a Sky Asian Bistro at the Philly International Airport preceding. A bunch of new Eagles and old Flyers (like Brian Propp) joined Ed Rendell, Howard Eskin and Big Daddy Graham when Chickie’s & Pete’s (1526 Packer) owner Pete Ciarrocchi celebrated his #1 Sports Bar in North America honor from ESPN.com. Young Nate Parker promoted his screening of the George Lucas’ flick Double Victory with actual members of the Tuskegee Airmen at the National Constitution Center. Before Courtney Love dissed their boss, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins and bassist Nate Mendel drank at McGillin’s Ole Ale House. Vice President Joe Biden and with wife Jill were at the top of the Veteran’s Day ceremony list at the Delaware County Courthouse in Media, PA. Phillies slugger Ryan Howard limped by the Bridgette Mayer Gallery on Seventh and Walnut for the Karmic Abstraction exhibit. Rapper/actor Ice T and missus Coco were all over The Pool at Harrahs’ in Atlantic City, filming bits of their E! TV jawn Ice Loves Coco. While Tashan on South Broad had a visit from Silver Linings Playbook actor Chris Tucker on one evening, on Saturday night director David O’ Russell and over 30 cast and crew members including Jacki Weaver, Paul Herman, Anupam Kher, Shea Whigham (aka Eli Thompson from Boardwalk Empire) and John Ortiz ate tons and watched the Pacquiao v Marquez fight on Tashan’s brand new flat screen television over the bar. There is some discrepancy is to whether or not People mag’s Sexiest Man 2011 Bradley Cooper was in attendance. Some local blogs say yes. One attendee there until 1 a.m., Tashan publicist George Polgar, says he never saw Coop. Sayin’. As for Silver Linings’ silverest member, Robert DeNiro has been spotted at several Starr-related nosheries in the last few days including Il Pittore, Talula’s Garden and Route 6 — the latter of which isn’t open yet if you read as much above.
Lastly, I have never met someone as gentlemanly as Joe Frazier. The Philly-based boxer, singer, entrepreneur, gym own and subject of Joe Frazier: When the Smoke Clears was a delight to speak with, a calm presence in a rocky field of players. Many paid their respects at the Wells Fargo Center and the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church, including Chuck Zito, Muhammad Ali and Rev. Jesse Jackson. I don’t ever think I can truly say goodbye to the gentle legend.
