ICEPACK ILLUSTRATED: Counting Birds/Eating Fish
Do fries go with that shaky shadow dance? You'll find out soon enough as Gary Reuben's fabulously grimy Underground Arts theater space in the Wolf Building at 12th and Callowhill gets its long-discussed food and booze component. Underground Eats and its one-time session drumming chef Tom Stalling have a conditional liquor license, are waiting for approvals on the kitchen (ask about the "voodoo shrimp") from the Health Dept, and are looking at not only serving locally grown craft beers but hopefully naming one of their own - a heady brew that should go nicely with upcoming shows like Theatre Confetti's Jan. 12 event and Jan. 21.'s Illuminoir by Move and Groove Productions. See Also: Meal Ticket.

It’s been a minute since Philly old-timey crooner Stephen Bluhm played his hometown. He moved up to Hudson, NY last year to help run Club Helsinki and got a gig at Etsy.com. “Etsy opened an office right next to Club Helsinki and my home, which really saved my ass ’cause Helsinki doesn’t pay,” laughs the customer supporter/FAQ writer. This weekend then is a happy homecoming for Bluhm, excited as he is to perform at his friend Evan Levine’s birthday bash at his new home, International Waters’ show house at (48th & Hazel). Dead Milkman Joe Jack Talcum, Joshua Garrett-Davis and Moldy Peaches’ Toby Goodshank join in.
Just because Iron Chef Jose Garces is busy trying to open those three restaurants (Amada, Distrito, Village Whiskey at the Revel Resort in Atlantic City by spring doesn’t mean he’s forgotten his little ole wiener spot in Philly. Gabby Gayborhoood neighbors tell of progress at S. 13th Street’s Abe Frohman’s Wursthaus, Garces’ brew-n-brats boite named for the mythical sausage king of Chicago from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and housed in the spot that once held Letto Deli. Rumor has it that Garces longtime design collaborator Jun Aizaki is on the job, working out a Frankford Hall-like seating arrangement of benches and expanding the physical space outwards toward the pavement and not to its left where the Gold Club resides.
Wake up fuckers — it’s Schuylkill bird census time. At 7 a.m. on Jan. 7, the birding team at Schuylkill Center need help collect important data about wintering bird populations. No prior expertise required. Have an interest in birding? Call 215-482-7300 x 110, email scee@schuylkillcenter.org or go here.
After recently casting critically acclaimed Michael Shannon as General Zod and tagging vets such as Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe for paternal roles, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel is looking at nearly-Philly-native Bradley Cooper to make a cameo Lex Luthor appearance. Ugh. Then again, he isn’t ruining the re-make of The Crow. Small blessings. Speaking of movie-making, the Backseat Conceptions crew will hit the soon-closing Tritone on Jan. 7. They’ll be documenting fans’ and detractors’ memories of the space inside the show (Cisco Jeeters and Sideshow Prophets are on the bill) and outside from the confines of an old bus. The last time I got into a school bus outside Tritone, I woke up days later in Carlisle, PA with a blue powdery film on my face. Could be fun. Proceed with caution.
Curbed L.A. reports that NBC Universal has cancelled its planned 1.5 million-square-foot production and office project in L.A. (MetroStudios@Lankershim) across from Universal Studios. Blame Comcast, the new owners, for what’s being called (by the Hollywood Reporter) the most significant real estate decision made by management since Comcast completed its purchase of a majority share of NBC Universal from General Electric in January 2011.” The MetroStudios project is separate from NBC Universal’s Evolution Plan — a 20-year, $3 billion effort that would fill Universal Studios’ back lot with all manner of housing and studio upgrades. So far, that plan is still A-OK. Plus there’s the deal that Comcast reached with the Walt Disney Co. (a 10-year distribution agreement) to show all Disney-owned content (ABC, ESPN, etc.) on all manner of television sets, laptops, smart phones and tablets. What, no microfiche?
Congrats to Philly’s Boyz II Men — Nate Morris, Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman — for getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week. Three guys, one star. Hmm?
Christmas lovers rejoice: Jan. 6 at Le Virtu on East Passyunk finds the Abbruzzese paradise celebrating the night of the Epifania, (Epiphany to you heathens) and observing the tradition of “La Befana.” Throughout Italy during Befana, a mythical old woman visits every child and leaves gifts in their stockings — or coal, if they’ve been naughty. Le Virtu will hold its own Befana and be visited by the restaurant’s resident old woman who will present each diner with a small bag of treats. Look, I haven’t been a saint but can I still get that night’s chick peas cooked in rabbit broth and pork shoulder Milanese in my bag?
DJs like you: Local gent Diplo has a free EP out at all the usual haunts called Express Yourself starring Elephant Man, GTA, and Billy the Gent. Electro-mack Steve Aoki, a local fave, is going to have to charge you for his new joint on the Ultra label, Wonderland, but it’s got a few worthy guests in Rivers Cuomo, Lil Jon, and Philly’s own rap rage rangers Chiddy Bang.
Right when you thought it was safe to go fishing in the Gayborhood, Mike Stollenwerk goes and moves the opening date of Fish on S. 13th (not counting the New Year’s Eve lite nibble bash) from Jan. 5 to Jan 9. It shall be.
WHOWHATWHERE: New Jersey and you: While it was just announced that Teresa Giudice of Real Housewives of New Jersey would compete on NBC’s Celebrity Apprentice to benefit Berwyn-based kidney-disease foundation NephCure, one cast member of Jersey Shore had less-than-charitable motives even though she had nice things to say about Philly. Deena Cortese hung out with fans at Shampoo last week and talked up her last appearance in Philly during the Jingle Ball at the Wells Fargo, saying that she felt more warmth from that holiday crowd than she has any live appearance she’s had of late. So much so she says she’ll return before winter’s end. More love than the VMAs? Those folk are darned near Sister Sculion-like, c’maaaaan. Anyway, she hung out with the peeps of Dancing on Air, the long-ago WPHL-17 fave. Yes DoA producer Mike Nise says it is making its return this year. We’ve heard that before. Then again, he’s got a business manager for the upcoming program AND the channel’s recent re-runs of retro-footage have been a Nielsen hit. Stay tuned. Before the holidays are a distant memory, the Lubavitch of Bucks County presented a Chanukah Concert with Israeli pop sensation Gad Elbaz on the fifth night of Chanukah, at the Glazier Center in Newtown. Philanthropist/Friday Morning QB publisher Kal Rudman and top Philadelphia police commanders joined SangKee Restaurant Group owner Michael Chow at Lincoln Financial Field in dishing out hot lunches to more than 100 police officers on duty at the final Eagles game of the season on New Year’s Day. Plus the historic Uptown Theater at 2240 N. Broad St., whose redevelopment and construction is going along nicely, was lit like a Christmas tree over the holidays.
