ICEPACK ILLUSTRATED: Fresh Prince, Dawson, M. Night, Pow Pow and a coupla Gavins
The Jose Garces Restaurant Group roster changes continue now that chef Dave Conn leaves JG Domestic to run the Garces' upcoming Scottsdale AZ/Drinkwater restaurant/saloon/hotel service/Garces Trading Company (GTC) outpost. Replacing Conn at JG will be one of his sous chefs Matthew Hiebsch. Word has Adam Delosso leaving GTC to head up the catering arm of Garces' dining out of Cira Building only to be replaced at GTC by his sous Greg Ciprioni.

Holy rolling Philadelphia folk singer John Francis never met a charity he didn’t like. This time, it’s the worthy issue of homelessness and he’s enlisted the help of Johnny and June’s son John Carter Cash and show opener Hezekiah Jones on Aug. 13, 6:30 p.m., at Fergie’s (moved from Broad Street Ministry). The Johns, will be playing both original songs and songs celebrating the legacy of Johnny Cash and the Carter Family. Tickets are $10 and the show is being sponsored by The Philadelphia Folksong Society. Swell.
Broad Street thanks you: Michael Petrogiannis, the guy who owns the Melrose, Country Club and Mayfair diners, is taking over my neighboring Broad Street Diner at Ellsworth. There was industrial waste problems with the space at one time (ask Stephen Starr who had it in his clutches twice) but if anyone knows how to fix a diner it’d be Petrogiannis.
The Blue Horizon boxing spot up on North Broad, with the aid of a Governor Corbett-approved $6 million grant, will become a swanky hotel/bar/restaurant under the watchful gaze of Mosaic Development Partners.
Levittown-native Stephen Tow, a history professor at the Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, PA, will have his newest book The Strangest Tribe: How A Group of Seattle Rock Bands Invented Grunge published in October by Sasquatch Publishing.
In case you were wondering what else Chris Pow Pow Powell is up to when he isn’t Man Man-ing it, the drummer/composer told me right before MM’s Troc gig last week that he’s putting finishing touches on a new music/art/poster series called Spaceship Aloha. He’s also teaching drums, and recording and rehearsing for his new solo band ENdless JOY (“been calling it EnJOY for short”) as well as shooting a video for its first single and is collaborating with the longtime membership of Philly’s Icy Demons on a new full album project.
Icepack pal/comedian Danny Ozark got jumped, robbed and beaten last Saturday near his apartment in Germantown by a group of creeps looking to make trouble. He’s pretty badly battered but not down despite “He’s a mentor to me and we’re going to do whatever we have to in order to make this right,” says Rich "N.A. Poe" Tamaccio who along with fellow Comedians for a Cause members Dirty Diamond, Ed McGonigal, Joe Mayo, Benny Michaels and more will host a benefit for Ozark’s medical expenses at the Irish Pol (45 S. Third) Aug. 13 at 8 p.m.

Old time jazz guitarist, singer and all around raconteur and roustabout Marty Grosz is back at the Farmer's Cabinet, Aug. 12 , 8:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m., with multi-instrumentalist Scott Robinson and Danny Tobias, on cornet. Word has it too that a documentary of Grosz is showing on Michigan public television Aug. 18. Martygrosz.com for more info on that one.
The other day I was walking by the old Ansill space at Third and Bainbridge and spied chef Jason Cichonski looking dusty. No he wasn’t flipping floury dough. He was chopping and sawing and prepping his own restaurant, in partnership with Chip Roman of Blackfish/Mica fame. Construction is well under way. Cichonski said that a name for his new space wasn’t quite ready but he did give me a mostly-kind-of date: late October.
WHOWHATWHERE: Before leaving for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Live Arts' boss Nick Stuccio hung at the Feastival pre-party at Percy Street Barbecue with Audrey Claire Taichman and Michael Solomonov. Taichman, Solomonov and Stephen Starr are behind FEASTIVAL 2011 to be held on Sept. 14 at Pier 9. Mr. and Mrs. M. Night Shyamalan sipped drinks at Stephen Starr’s beer joint Frankford Hall in celebration of the filmmaker's birthday. When Sir Benjamin Vaughn’s quintet played a secret gig at Little Bar last Sunday it wasn’t secret to Vaughn pals Kenn Kweder and Jerry Blavat, the latter with whom Vaughn shares a radio station: WXPN. Also there was Molly’s Books’ Molly Russakoff who will host a book signing for Blavat’s You Only Rock Once at the end of September. Keri Hilson hit Children's Hospital Friday for a young patient chat for The Voice, the audio/video center created and donated by American Idol host Ryan Seacrest. A tale of two Gavins: Gavin Rossdale of Bush ate at Parc on Rittenhouse Square and did a meet and greet at 104.5 FM’s studios. Before he got horribly beaten near his NYC saloon, Gavin Degraw spent time hitting several local radio stations as did Britney Spears’ opening act Jessie and the Boy Toys. The cast of the new BET television series Reed Between The Lines (Anna Maria Horsford, Melissa De Sousa, Malcolm Jamal-Warner and Tracee Ellis Ross) visited the NABJ event at the Convention Center last week as did Cuba Gooding and Terrence Howard. James Van Der Beek ate at Fuel on 12th and Walnut during a break in shooting Backwards. Because you need fuel for that sort of thing. Finally Will Smith has been all over the place as of late — hitting the treadmill at Sweat Gym on N. Third, stopping by The Beat FM’s studios, and introducing the Nas/Damian Marley show at Electric Factory (Marsha Ambrosious was there too) where he hung on the side of the stage with son Jaden by his side, jumped on-and-off the stage during Nas’ solo, ran amok in a white tank top and generally caused havoc. The Hollywood Reporter claims that Will and Jaden are in town to discuss a supernatural father-and-son drama to be directed by birthday boy Shyamalan.
