I know we Crit-Massed this but let me reiterate that Goat-turned-Black Landlord-turned-Kenzinger spokes-model Blue Maxx Stoyanoff-Williams has been sick for a minute. Not his usual goofball sick or macabre sick or hey A.D. I'm gonna be sick in your sink sick but sick-sick. None of your business with what. Just know that on Dec. 19, Standard Tap and Philadelphia Brewing Company will hold a benefit to help Maxx with hospital cash. Do it. He's bartending. Tip big. And no backtalk. And make sure you save your cash for that "Philadelphia Golden Ticket" auction for that unlimited two-ticket pass to Electric Factory, Mann Center, The Trocadero, all R5 events, Theatre of Living Arts, Festival Pier at Penns Landing, Union Transfer, Milkboy, The Note, Kung Fu Necktie, Johnny Brendas, The Fire, North Star, Fergie's and Time. Wait. THE NOTE? I'll give you more money NOT to include that. Siiiiiiiiiiiiiike.

First things first: Some recent actions at Canary Promotions (they do lots of arts PR including that for the Live Arts/Fringe, the Wilma and the Rosenbach) leave us bluer-than-blue-sadder-than-sad. Emaleigh Doley just left the Canary nest so to become the marketing and communications manager at the Philly-based TicketLeap. She’ll also spend some time in her home zone and get in involved in neighborhood improvement projects in Germantown with lots planned for Spring ’12 (rocklandstreet.com). Jumping into the Canary fray though — sob — is Carolyn Huckabay, CP’s arts editor/copy chief for the last five years. Yes. She’ll be missed missed missed though surely C-Huck will be pitching me stories about Irish people and Dracula at the Rosenbach in no time in accordance with her new gig as public relations associate. But according to Huckabay’s new Canary bio, it says she “plays the French horn” and “assists in her boyfriend’s home-brewing ventures by taste-testing.” This means she likes to booze it up and get all brassy. The things you find out about co-workers when they’re leaving. Sweet sorrow.
Check out my PR pal Peter Breslow flying high. No No. Not that way. He’s shooting advertising stuff for Independence Helicopter (independenceheli.com), a local copter company who’ve been offering holiday tour packages (between $200 and $600) that’d make Santa second guess the reindeers for delivery’s sake. Now they just added a New Year’s Eve deal where you can see both Philly firework displays up close. For $750 — for three passengers — you get to ride in a state-of-the-art Robinson helicopter. You must board at NE Airport by 11:30, you’ll fly for about an hour and you’ll be able to hover over the Ben Franklin Bridge at midnight. Flights are limited. Hurry up.
While I bemoan Boardwalk Empire’s loss of Jimmy Darmody during its season finale in this week’s Icepack-in-Print, I can at least walk out my front door and remember the good times At 8th and Ellsworth, there’s an installation illustration of the Phantom-masked Richard Harrow (played by Jack Huston) that the Street Dept.’s blog has excellent photos.

If you want to read something heroic and cool about how Comcast Philly reacted to Oprah Winfrey’s “greedy” wants for more cash for her not-so-hot cable network, check out the Hollywood Reporter’s Dec. 14 story hollywoodreporter.com/news/oprah-winfrey-next-chapter-own-272979. If it was Brian Roberts who shut her down, man, do I have new-found love and respect for him. Go ahead and call that new complex at Broad and Pattison Xfinity Live! Keep Oprah on her toes and you can name the whole town Comcast.
Philly’s fine-mighty-fine artist Jed Williams’ Ultra-Wonderful Gallery on Sixth and Bainbridge celebrates its first year’s anniversary on Dec. 17.
Remember last year when we touted construction on the Philly suburban Sun Center Studios, its large soundstages, $39 million overhaul and 32-acre campus? Well, in November it had a big reveal at an industry soiree at the SoHo House in West Hollywood with studio executives oohing and ahhing. Now, it has it its first big tenant in Sony Pictures Entertainment and One Thousand A.E. That’s the Will and Jaden Smith-starring/M. Night Shyamalan-directing meeting of the production companies (Overbrook Entertainment and Blinding Edge Pictures) who, according to Sun set construction on the lot to begin filming early 2012. (A July 2013 date is set for its release. “Principal photography on Night’s movie starts in February but not here,” adds Sharon Pinkenson, Greater Philly Film Org goddess. “In March, the production will commence on stages in Delaware and Philadelphia counties. Sorry but I’m sworn to secrecy,” says Pinkenson as to specifics. One thing she was able to enthuse about was the beginning of The Red Robin shoot in Villanova territory, a CIA father/son thriller written and directed by Michael Z. Wechsler. “And starring that Judd Hirsch,” says Pinkenson. Oy. Look for the cast and crew throughout December.
Don’t say Making Time didn’t give you anything: It’s time for their annual holiday $2 deal-and-dance on Dec. 17 with the Pink Skull DJ team (amongst dozens) and a live performance by Spank Rock at Voyeur. You didn’t cough up cash for Spank’s sophomore effort so at least give him a saw buck.
The Mayor is hitting two amusing events this season: the Kimmel Center’s official 10th b-day with CEO Anne Ewers for the Performing Arts Day on Dec. 16 with Friends and Family of the Kimmel and Peter Nero who happens to be no one’s friend. Then Hizzoner joins David Benton from The Rittenhouse Hotel on Dec. 20 at happy hour so to dedicate a suite to superstar opera tenor Luciano Pavarotti. Honest.
Remember like a month ago I mentioned a local interior designer (now seeking anonymity) who mentioned a big downtown project she was this near to being hired for? The location would be a new flagship Walgreens that’s near-to-signing on the dotted line at Broad and Chestnut. Nothing solid. Still in the rumor stage. But very close to being a reality if realtor friends — and that interior designer — was correct.
Christmas in South Philly gets a little scarier when Cha-cha’razzi (1918 S. Bancroft) hosts a Black Holiday of bleak VHS film screenings on Dec. 18 with a real live Bad Santa on hand to make the Yuletime sour. Don’t stand under that mistletoe, mang.
WHOWHATWHERE: Vivica A. Fox ate at Ruth’s Chris Steak House and DiNardo’s Crabs during her time in Philly shooting a catalog for the Vivica A. Fox Hair Collection at Power Plant Studios in Old City. Wow, DiNardo’s. I have to go there. Been a while. QVC’s best gal (seven lines and counting) Melania Trump stopped by Philadelphia Style’s holiday party at the bar in the Ritz Carlton, smiled with impossibly white teeth, and signed copies of the just-out seasonal issue with her merry mug on the cover. Winter white yo! Wanda Sykes did some eating on the Square last week, hitting Parc on then Smith & Wollensky. We stopped backstage at Johnny Brenda’s to hang out with Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. the other night and what were they watching on their laptop? Tim & Eric everything — Awesome Show, stuff on Funny or Die! Mary J Blige met up with Patty Jackson at WDAS-FM’s iHeart Performance Theater in Bala Cynwyd. Nigel Richards is doing all kinds of stuff with his 611 brand. Richards brought his stylized sport gear of flannel button downs and hats (DJ Life, Luxe Life) to Metro Men’s Clothing on East Passyunk last week. Now, with some decorating help from High Fidelity’s Bruce Reinfeld, Richards has a holiday pop up shop at 225 S. 18th St., running Fri.-Sun., Dec. 16-18, 11 a.m. on.
