ICEPACK ILLUSTRATED: Nicki, Busses, Patti and Britt
The wired-weird and wooly Busses - Dave Brett, Jason Bachman, Nick Apice - didn't just make their next two songs, "Metal" and "Shangri-La," a single available for free download at their website. They streeeeetched the two tunes into an EP (for "extra peculiar"?) that they'll give away at a Johnny Brenda record-release bash this Friday, April 6, with Break It Up on the bill. Mwhahaha.

We don’t know what her connection is to the Philly-famous Rocky Balboa is but native New Yorker Rene Lopez, in honor of the boxing movie’s 35th anniversary, lensed a video for her new single “Shing-a-ling Is What I Bring” inspired by Rocky. Me. I’m lensing a video based on Mean Streets.
Matt Levin is testing his lunches at Square Peg, April 5, 11 a.m. Jewish wedding soup, a duck club (which I once belonged to) and his usual fried chicken with, wait for it, Kool-Aid pickled watermelon are on the big lunch board.
Tiger Strikes Asteroid gallery member Michael Macfeat with the curatorial aid of TSA’s Terri Saulin brings his new Bar Sinister exhibition of color bar prints and sculptures to the Tiger April 6. He’s a bibliophile, so expect some crowded frames.
New Jersey/Upper Darby punk queen/poetess/Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee Patti Smith set the release date for her new Columbia label album Banga. Smith’s first collection of original material since 2004 comes complete with a new magnetic single “April Fool” featuring her pal, Television guitarist Tom Verlaine. The single can currently be found digitally at all the usual culprits and the rest of Banga stars her band Tony Shanahan, Jay Dee Daugherty and Lenny Kaye along with Smith’s son Jackson and daughter Jesse Paris.
Coalition Ingenu hosts the star of stage, screen (Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles) and Northern Liberties, Justin Duerr and his new Stranger Things Have Never Happened exhibit of paintings and etchings open at 309 Cherry Fri., April 6. This is a most thorough examination of Duerr’s works, several of which can be found fanging (I meant “hanging” but I got to tell you, “fanging” works too) in the Icepack house.
Bob Logue of Khyber Pass, Federal Donuts and Bodhi Coffee fame is opening The New Market in Head House Square’s the Shambles at Lombard and Second. It ain’t just about food like Love Bar Chocolate and Farm to City’s marketeers. Logue’s New Market jawn, open Fridays from 3-9 p.m., hosts a slew of goods and services such as Bennett Composting, Tyson Boles (architectural salvage and vintage glass), Carol Forman (photography), Jeffrey Allen Designs (industrial furniture design) and Edibikes (bicycles).
Philly man-about-the-turntable King Britt has got some heavy reading to do — about himself! Check out this month’s Fact mag and Self Titled for tall tales on the local titan with an exclusive Britt mix to boot.
WHOWHATWHERE: Pink Friday provocateur Nicki Minaj hit FYE for half an hour this Wednesday and made a mess of Chestnut and Broad what with all those dyed bouffant-wearing fans leaving their hair pins behind. Icelandic faves Of Monsters And Men stopped by Radio 104.5’s iHeart Radio Performance Theater in Bala before packing the Theater of the Living Arts. Jersey Shore’s Pauly D started his DJ residency at The Pool at Harrah’s Atlantic City last weekend with surprise guest Mob Wives’ Renee Graziano (she’s the one whose husband ratted out her dad on the VH-1 series’ latest episodes) in the house. Also at The Pool was a slew of MTV cameras shooting the network’s Pauly D solo spin-off series. Bishop T.D. Jakes did his finest at WDAS’ studios the other day, discussing his choice of sermons at the Potter’s House. Ex-senator and comedian Arlen Specter walked around with an Angry Birds plush toy at his latest book signing (Life Among The Cannibals) at Barnes & Noble in Fairless Hills. Is he OK? Supermodel Christy Turlington acted as the keynote speaker at the Public Health Management Corp.’s Mosaic: Ruby Anniversary at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts the other night. No one seemed to care that she was married to Ed Burns or that she runs Every Mother Counts. The boys just wanted to stare at her. The same thing probably happened when Philly-raised actress Maria Bello met up with Rich Cohen of Clarke & Cohen at her We Advance benefit held at Beblushing.com founder Gail Slogoff’s home in Merion, PA. Maybe everyone was staring at Rich, though. Who can say? Lastly, David L. Cohen, with master of cermony Larry Kane in the house, got honored by the Jewish National Fund at the 2012 Tree of Life dinner at Vie. Very sexy.
