ICEPACK ILLUSTRATED: Space 1026 for kids! Joshua Scott Albert's Staph infection! And yeah, more Kendra
This year it's a blog and not a photocopy and food rather than music that's had Philly's cooking-circle's panties bunched: Staphmeal.com. Anonymously, the writer charged George Perrier with racism, Bryan Sikora with dick-ish-ness and Stephen Starr and Jose Garces with nabbing tips. Perrier even got a lawyer on the case which led the anonymous chap to outing himself. So welcome Joshua Scott Albert, a 25-year-old ex-employee of Amis (whose Marc Vetri he's hated on), Zavino and a.kitchen who has a funny YouTube vid of himself getting arrested for being drunk outside Barbuzzo. Yowsah.

Every couple years somebody kinda-anonymous comes along and shakes up their insular self-congratulatory community. Surely you remember the single-paged (both sides!) Xeroxed anti-fanzine broadside Cherry Coke which, during its brief tenure, dissed Philly music clowns hard? That was a decade ago. Ah, memories. This year it’s a blog and not a photocopy and food rather than music that’s had Philly’s cooking-circle’s panties bunched: Staphmeal.com. Anonymously, the writer charged George Perrier with racism, Bryan Sikora with dick-ish-ness and Stephen Starr and Jose Garces with nabbing tips. Perrier even got a lawyer on the case which led the anonymous chap to outing himself. So welcome Joshua Scott Albert, a 25-year-old ex-employee of Amis (whose Marc Vetri he’s hated on), Zavino and a.kitchen who has a funny YouTube vid of himself getting arrested for being drunk outside Barbuzzo. They may be scuzz punks but they know their way around a nize melody: Philly’s psych-garage faves Far Out Fangtooth release their vinyl wonder Pure & Disinterested on the grand-just-grand Siltbreeze label Oct. 1, at Kung Fu Necktie. Do that.
Space 1026-ers Andrew Jeffrey Wright, Rose Luardo and Ted Passon just made themselves a children’s television program — Joke Summer School — and have placed it on a Comcast On-Demand channel Activity TV. The sketch and joke show for kids finds Passon behind the lens, directing while “Rose and I write and star in the show,” says Wright, crediting other writers Thom Lessner, Doogie Horner and Laris Kreslins, as well as local comedians in the show, like Carolyn Busa and Sidney Gantt. Check an episode online here. Meanwhile, there’s a huge buzz going about N.E.R.D. Pharrell Williams coming to Philly’s Comcast Center to discuss Karmaloop TV, the mini-TV network/on-line site dealing with slightly older adults.
If Suburgatory was a live gig it would be the klatch of weird-area suburban punks playing at the Balcony at the Trocadero Oct. 4: Get Railed (from Delco), Acidfinger (from Levittown) and KMX (from King of Prussia). Oink.
I love a good strong cocktail from the hands of Farmers’ Cabinet mixologist Phoebe Esmon and I love Tom Waits records old and new (Bad as Me is pretty brilliant and bluesy for those who can’t wait). So to get your booze palate tickled by Esmon drinks inspired by Waits’ drunky Small Change album was a treat. She featured these woozy cocktails the other night but I’m hoping if you ask her nice, she’ll do it again. “The Piano has Been Drinking” indeed.
David Uosikkinen’s In the Pocket: Essential Songs of Philadelphia project filled with fellow Hooters and friends like Jeffrey Gaines and a few cats from The A’s is already up to its fourth single, “Soon You’ll Be Gone.” The tune is a Blues Busters track from 1965 and a song covered by John Kuzma and Bobby Woods who originally performed the song with The Hooters in 1980. “We lost two incredible musicians and friends this year with the passing of John Kuzma and Bobby Woods,” said Uosikkinen in a prepared statement. “When it came time to record another song for In the Pocket, I wanted to pay tribute to John and Bobby. They helped to create that signature ska sound of the early Hooters and owned The Hooters’ version of “Soon You’ll Be Gone”, never to be duplicated. This is a nod and a thank you to them and their extraordinary talent.” The track featuring Soul Survivors, Charlie and Richie Ingui and saxophonist Jay Davidson gets its live debut on Mon., Oct. 3 at World Cafe Live and can be downloaded here. Make sure you catch Uosikkinen & the rest of Pocket’s mugs during the autumn premiere of On Canvas, PBS/Channel 12/WHYY TV’s local arts big show Oct. 6 at 10 p.m.
Looks like fishy restaurateur Mike Stollenwerk might be selling off Peter to pay for Paul, the Paul being his cool large scale Fish at 12th and Locust, his Peters being his Bella Vista BYOB Little Fish (to its chef Chadd Jenkins) and his recently opened Fishtown Fathom Seafood House to whomever’s got worms and chicken necks in his deep pockets.
If it isn’t enough that Donnie Wahlberg’s coming to McFaddens’ for its decade anniversary (Oct. 1), that Emilio Estevez and Martin Sheen will hit Walmart, (3641 Horizon Blvd., Trevose) and AMC Neshaminy 24 for their joint film project The Way (Oct. 3) and that David Boreanaz and Carla Gugino will hit the Kimmel Center screening of The Mighty Macs (Oct. 14), Jersey-born comic Joe Piscopo will be at Temple U’s main campus for television producer Donna Benner’s class (Sept. 30). Ask Piscopo about those 24K gold-infused leather baseballs, sanctioned by MLB in conjunction with Rawlings whose commercials are on DirecTV.
WHOWHATWHERE: Tyrese Gibson was spied eating at Swanky Bubbles (didn’t they change their name on Bar Rescue?) just one day before he got tossed from a Delaware radio station after taking a stand against an area liquor store being too close to an elementary school zone. TMZ has been reporting that WJKS KISS 101.7 in Delaware’s management freaked when Tyrese spoke out about not allowing liquor sales near schools after seeing one on his way to the station. One time-Philly dweller/Playboy play thing thing/reality star Kendra Wilkinson made not one but two stops in the area, the first hawking her book Being Kendra at Barnes and Noble with a guest appearance by Fox 29’s Mike Jerrick, and the other promoting Ab Cuts at the GNC Store in Woodbury, NJ. Now go, and never darken our towels again. Speaking of sporting types, Amy Fisher has been in and out of Philly training with our town’s Damon Feldman for his Celebrity Boxing bout on the left coast co-starring Joey Buttafuoco, Michael Lohan, Jose Canseco (or his twin brother?) and that Octomom lady. Hey-o. Maybe you didn’t go to F/M Fest or POPPED! But Foster the People did, to the latter. They showed up for their Saturday set wearing Phillies gear — lead singer Mark Foster wore a red puffy vest and drummer Mark Pontius wore a red Phillies cardigan which they got during a trip to Mitchell & Ness’ VIP gifting room. Jared Lee hit the Mix 106.1 FM performance suite in Bala Cynwyd just for giggles. And worrying that her 15 minutes may soon be up and up hard, Snooki is running scared and orange at The Pool at Harrahs in Atlantic City.
