ICEPACK ILLUSTRATED: Tim, Eric, Odean, Jimmy and the Goodburger curse

If you are as tired as I of having to trek to Valley Forge for a good old vanity vinyl fair, say no more. Jonathan Yates, owner of the Beautiful World Syndicate (on East Passyunk) has done Philly Record Riots in the past. Yet never in league with a partner as auspicious as the founder of Brooklyn's Record Riot movement, Stephen Gritzan (of Iris Records in Jersey City, NJ). Volia - Dec. 11's Philly Record Riot at Starlight Ballroom on N. Ninth (across from the Punk Rock Flea Market) 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. "Philly has had good one-off record shows before," says Gritzan in an email. "But the goal of the Philly Record Riot is to have it become well-known on the ledger of the serious national and international record buyer. Why should New York corner the market on vinyl shows?" Why indeed. Gentlemen. Ladies. Bring your turntables. And leave those miserable iPods behind.

If you are as tired as I of having to trek to Valley Forge for a good old vanity vinyl fair, say no more. Jonathan Yates, owner of the Beautiful World Syndicate (on East Passyunk) has done Philly Record Riots in the past. Yet never in league with a partner as auspicious as the founder of Brooklyn’s Record Riot movement, Stephen Gritzan (of Iris Records in Jersey City, NJ). Volia — Dec. 11’s Philly Record Riot at Starlight Ballroom on N. Ninth (across from the Punk Rock Flea Market) 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Philly has had good one-off record shows before,” says Gritzan in an email. “But the goal of the Philly Record Riot is to have it become well-known on the ledger of the serious national and international record buyer. Why should New York corner the market on vinyl shows?” Why indeed. Gentlemen. Ladies. Bring your turntables. And leave those miserable iPods behind.

Do not play the number 1725 any time soon. 1725 Chestnut St. seems an unlucky, cursed spot when you consider that the address’ Famous Dave’s BBQ spot just shut down after one year. That’s about as long as Goodburger lasted at the same spot. Sad.

What do local reality television stars do when the cameras shut down and the microphones go quiet? They host charity things. The Apprentice’s Erin Elmore and her fellow attorney Leeza Garber host a drink special/rich benefit for the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) Thu., Dec. 8, Table 31 at the Comcast Center. Project Runway victor Jay McCarroll will judge at the Young Professionals/Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Ugly Sweater Party Dec. 17 at the City Tap House (39th and Walnut). Seriously, wear an ugly sweater. You have them. (Info: Jessica McGarvey 215-662-0105 or JMcGarvey@publichouseusa.com).

La Société Expéditionnaire, the willingly experimental label known for its acceptance of Pennsylvania locals such as Lewis & Clarke (Light Time EP, Blasts of Holy Birth) just signed Philly’s Arc in Round, the Krautrock-ing shoegazer act once known as Relay. Hey.

Whoa ?uest. The New York Post is reporting that “in the wake of the “Lyin’ Ass Bitch” incident” regarding the Fishbone song and Republican candidate Michele Bachmann, NBC must approve of all song choices made by The Roots in their role as Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night show house band. Three, count them, three NBC executives, will make that nightly decision. Dag. At least everybody liked undun.

I don’t know that I care for the red, white and blue color scheme but halleluiah anyway: The Broad Street Diner is finally open, as of this morning. The 24-hour Broad and Ellsworth dining spot that Stephen Starr ceded to Michael Petrogiannis (Country Club, Melrose, Mayfair and Tiffany are his other diner charges) should be my nightly new go-to spot en route to Chez Divaland before the effect of the booze wears off.

D.A. Seth Williams decided against a new sentencing hearing for Mumia Abu-Jamal. This should somehow spell trouble in river city indeed, so on a lighter note, let’s look at Mike Stollenwerk (of Fish fame) who seems to be picking up where the late Joey Vento left off in remembering Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner. On Dec. 9, it’ll be 35 years since Faulkner was killed outside 1234 Locust where Fish will be and where the Independent Hotel resides. To honor Faulkner, Stollenwerk and The Independent’s crew will donate a police bicycle to the Sixth Police District during a ceremony at 4 p.m. on the 9th. Stollenwerk and Independent GM Jim Evans intend to keep Faulkner’s memory alive outside their respective businesses.

On Monday morning, Old City’s Shane Confectionary (110 Market St.) opened its doors, famously with new owners Ryan and Eric Berley of the neighboring Franklin Fountain (116 Market St.) at the helm. I used to live on Letitia Street for a dozen years and made Shane’s a weekly pit stop for chocolate drops and such sweet folderol. Shane’s opened in 1863 (not exactly when I lived around the corner) and was sold to the Berleys in Spring 2010 so they could spin their usual old-timey magic and refurbish the space and its equipment. After a long day in the chocolate pits, the bros held a party for the vendors, architects, sugar rushers and employees who made it all happen. The brothers predicted that the season's biggest sellers would be the old-fashioned butter cremes (available year round) and their molded hard-sugar candies in the holiday shapes of reindeers, trees and such.

The Habba Bellydancing crew, one of the East Coast’s most-renowned troupes, made an appearance at a special Sunday night session of the Tayoun family’s Baraka dance jam at St. Marin’s Hall on S. 10th Street last week. Lucky gents. This week, Joe and William Tayoun’s Baraka hits the Mermaid Inn on Dec. 8 in Jenkintown. Lucky Jenkintown.

Barry Gutin and Larry Cohen of Cuba Libre and GuestCounts confirmed to me that the chef they hired to run their Bernie Spain-owned re-do of the 10th and Walnut spot that housed Marathon Grill is Matt Levin, famously of Larry-n-Barry’s Brûlée Catering as well as Levin’s Four Loko-coated Adsum. “We had Matt in mind for this project immediately — and no one else,” says Gutin who has no date for opening, food concept and design other than “early 2012” and to say “call back in two weeks.” So we’ll call.

When was the last time that you can think of that Philly sax legend/elder Odean Pope played sideman? With Jamaaladeen Tacuma or Max Roach perhaps? Here Pope is though, on Dec. 9, playing tenor sax in vocalist Lisa ChavousExperience with the rhythm section of Warren Oree and “Stickman” Wyatt at Moonstone Arts Center on S. 13th. Historic, I assume.

Hey goombah. My neighboring Di Bruno Bros. keep going further and farther than their Italian Market roots once held as their spot in the Ardmore Farmers Market at Suburban Square (opened April 2011) has just expanded with six stalls, more available dates (seven days a week) and more space for additional products and demonstrations like the ones that fill their Ninth Street spot with hipster foodies.

Good for Corie Moskow, Gloss PR maven. She’s at the forefront of more than a few tony toy-for-tot charity runs in league with CBS 3’s Joy of Sharing Campaign. She helped with last Sunday’s brunch at Luca Sena’s Le Castagne (1920 Chestnut) where diners got (and get) a complimentary brunch entrée to anyone with a new, unwrapped toy (this continues on Sundays throughout the month of December, lecastagne.com) for the benefit of Children’s Hospital and the Salvation Army. On Dec. 8, Moskow, CBS 3 and the Rittenhouse Row Young Advisory Board host another toy and cocktail drive at Whisper. The first 50 people to donate toys receive a gift bag from Sephora. $30 at the door, or $25 at the door with a donation of a toy.

Philly’s Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim from the Cartoon Network’s Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! dropped the trailer for their first film, Tim & Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie on the Funny or Die website this week. You can see it for considerably less than a billion starting March 20 or on VOD starting Jan. 27.

Jimmy Contreras, Philly fashion know-it-all and lifestyle publicist with Matthew Vlahos Public Relations, filmed an episode of Emeril’s Table at the Martha Stewart Studios in Chelsea back in June. That appearance will serve as Emeril’s season finale when it airs at 11 a.m. Dec. 12 on the Hallmark channel. Jimmy and Emeril made Champagne punch. Kapow.

WHOWHATWHERE: Did you know that when President Barack Obama gave his speech to push Congress to act to extend and expand the payroll tax cut at Scranton High School in Scranton, PA, that the high school marching band played “Paint It Black?” That’s the hot musical tip from my bud/Icepack photog Scott Weiner. When Ryan Adams packed the Academy of Music last weekend, tween icon (well, ’90s tween icon) Mandy Moore, aka Mrs. Adams, was hanging backstage. No-More-Mr.-Nice-Guy Alice Cooper did a swell thing during his Saturday show at Atlantic City’s House of Blues: He donned a Flyers jersey after the first few songs of his set AND didn’t smear it with mascara. Old time Alice fans recall that he’s done this (hat) trick before with the orange-and-black. Kanye West stopped into the Borgata on Friday to hit DJ Tiesto’s sold-out spinning gig, even joining behind the steel wheels for a song. Before releasing his new CD Love and War and playing his sold-out show at World Café Live this weekend, Robin Thicke stopped by WDAS iHeart Performance Theater in Bala Cynwyd, PA. “Snooki” of Jersey Shore fame hit Perfumania in support of her new fragrance, Snooki by Nicole Polizzi in Jersey Gardens Mall in Elizabeth, NJ. Even weirder than THAT, another Jersey-ite, Real HousewivesTeresa Giudice made a Fabulicious book tour stop at the Furrylicious/Babylicious Pet Salon & Boutiques in Whitehouse Station, NJ. Closer to good reality, Philadelphia Eagle LeSean McCoy bought tons of goodies at Aramingo Ave.’s Toys R US then delivered the gifts to kids facing cancer during the Kisses for Kyle Foundation event at Dave & Buster’s. Not to be outdone, Eagles’ wide receiver DeSean Jackson received a birthday cake at the 10th annual Philadelphia Sports Fans Choice Awards at Radisson Hotel in Philly the other day with Darryl Dawkins, Vince Papale, and his kinda-sorta-maybe-date Mya (that Mya, the singer Mya) by his side. This after I told you last week that Jackson had his b-day jam at G-Lounge with Draya of VH1’s Basketball Wives LA, boxer Simon “One Punch” Carr and hip-hop video temptress Esther Baxter by Jackson’s side. Busy man.
