Though due to report to prison in September, City Paper cover subject Beanie Sigel was ready for bear with a just released, critically acclaimed new album This Time and a slew of sensational promotional duties before him. Now, he won’t be around to do Late Night with Jimmy Fallon with his Philly pals in The Roots, or the gig mentioned in a recent Ice Cube that gave the date of his last Philly show (Sept. 8, TLA) before going to federal prison on Sept. 12 on tax evasion charges. Beanie and a pal got snagged in Delaware County on the morning of Aug. 29, hours after This Time was released, on drug, weapons and driver’s license-related charges with a $300,000 cash bail for his troubles. Rather than pay the bail or its 10% fee, Sigel did something wise this time. “He’s starting his federal sentence two weeks early,” says Randy Alexander, publicist for Sigel and his just restarting Conshohocken-based label Ruffhouse. “All of his promotional dates are scratched. Everything’s cancelled. He’ll be picked up from Delaware County jail and taken directly into federal custody.” The label issued a statement from Ruffhouse boss Chris Schwartz. “Obviously, we’re very disappointed. However, Beanie has done nothing but display the utmost professionalism in all the initiatives related to the promotion of his new release. Beanie obviously has been struggling with some personal issues, and we continue to support him now and throughout his impending incarceration.” Alexander says that the label still, of course believes strongly in the record and Beanie as an artist. “We’re going to continue to pursue its promotion with the same ferocity that Beanie made this thing with.” That’s cool for the label, but Beans let me and a whole lot of people around him down with the stupid ass move.
Chef/owner Christopher Kearse’s Will BYOB eatery on East Passyunk opened with a bang last Friday, selling out several seatings with 70+ diners. It could’ve been the crispy skate with the sliver of black garlic paste on the plate, the white chocolate cheesecake, or the dense-yet-delicate corn soup. Mostly, it’s because Kearse has been a legend in Philly cooking circles for years and foodie peeps have been salivating for the moment that he’d open his own spot. Solid, brah.
Hey, so maybe you’re pissed that the parking is skint, that the city is using public land for a pricey all-cash concert, that Chris Cornell ain’t playing and that Mayor Nutter is telling those without Made in America tickets to stay home and download the music. Boo ya. We got the Clydesdales on the corner of 25th & Fairmount today (Aug. 30) at 6:30 p.m.
New York Post restaurant scribe Steve Cuozzo does not like the two guys from Philly who are taking over his fair city’s Tavern on the Green in ’13 or their local creperie Beau Monde. Not even a little bit.
Star of stage, screen and reality programming Corey Feldman has cozied up with Philly’s Breaking Glass Pictures for the distribution of his new indie horror flick 6 Degrees of Hell for all North American territories. Breaking Glass CEO Rich Wolff and Fabrication Films SVP Miriam Elchanan inked the deal for the creep-fest starring the Goonies guy, Jill Whelan (from The Love Boat!?) and Brian Anthony Wilson (from the locally-lensed Limitless). 6 Degrees’ world premier was held at The Sherman Theater on Main Street in Stroudsburg, the post-party with Feldman was at The Barley Creek Brewing Company in Tannersville, PA. and the whole sold-out film thing was a charity event for the United Way.
Speaking of premiers, did you know Bradley Cooper was in town with his friends from the Germantown-Jenkintown area Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal? The three old friends made a film called The Words about shifty authors talking about their work and premiered it at the Prince Music Theater courtesy The Philadelphia Film Society, Allied-THA and Greater Philadelphia Film Office boss Sharon Pinkenson with the mayor, Style mag’s John Collabelli, Drexel University professor Emil DeJohn and Cooper’s mom Gloria (DeJohn and Gloria are old family friends) in the packed house along with a slew of old pals from Germantown Academy. Audience members ribbed The Words’ scribes for having possibly stolen scripts from them (the theme of the film) during high school and Cooper revealed that not only did he do the first read for The Words in 1999 with Brian’s uncle Jack Klugman. Coop went on to say that there will be a Philly premiere in November for The Silver Linings Playbook — the David O. Russell film that Cooper and Robert DeNiro shot here — and that his next film with O. Russell and Amy Adams will start shooting in Philly in spring 2013 (the upcoming film is about the three decade long Abscam political scandal).
After having appeared on Top Chef and Top Chef All-Stars as one of its most notorious participants, Philly’s Jen Carroll is ready to get her crack at the Bravo network for a third round with Life After Top Chef. LATC just got its series’ premier date (Oct 3, 10 p.m.) and the Concrete Blonde can celebrate it while working on her white linen seafood restaurant in the West Village (at 33 Greenwich Street). For reality drama’s sake LATC’ll be better than Honey Boo Boo Child any day.
Art in the Age held a swell gathering for its newest clear-as-water zesty-as-medicine spirit SAGE (like ROOT) at VEDGE on Wednesday. The tasty treat actually gave and cured my hangover at the same time. My particular favorite of the four SAGE-laced cocktails was The Monticello featuring ginger-agave syrup, a wee bit of lemon and a whole-lotta SAGE. Hopefully VEDGE will continue serving these SAGE drinks — at the very least to me.
WHOWHATWHERE: Stand up comic Doug Benson recorded one of his dippy dope-addled Doug Loves Movies podcasts at Helium with WMMR's Preston & Steve and Samm Levine, who's been shooting that Phylicia Rashad NBC show Do No Harm in town. Before splitting Philly, Paranoia lovely Amber Heard shopped at Barneys Co-Op and Barnes & Noble on Rittenhouse Square. The iHeart Performance Radio Theater in Bala Cynwd got its share of musos this week with the funkadelic Megan & Liz, the soul-sonic Tamia (courtesy WDAS) and the pop-topped Dispatch (at 104.5). America’s Got Talent host and Mr. Mariah Carey, Nick Cannon hit up an Office Depot (he does their TV ads) in Plymouth Meeting to help donate 5000 back-to-school sack-packs to Philadelphia area students. Holly Ricciardi will appear with a whole lot of pies this Saturday at 1622 South St. when Magpie Artisan Pie Bakery & Boutique opens eaaaarly Sat., Sept. 1 Expect fruit pies, custard pies and savory pies such as plum cherry almond, orange blossom peach raspberry, buttery caramel apple, sour berry thyme custard, chocolate peanut butter mousse, lime custard with basil whipped cream, butterscotch bourbon, tomato corn cheddar, chicken tarragon with white wine sauce and croque monsieur to make an appearance.
