ICEPACK ILLUSTRATED: Who's Mildred? Where's Jen Zavala going? What's Schoolly Spinna-ing?
Philly's Latin king DJ Rahsaan and his AfroTaino Productions, bring Thom Yorke's favorite multi-lingual MC Ana Tijoux, Academy Award-winning musician Jorge Drexler and local spoken word diva Denice Frohman to Dobbs July 15. 'Musica' estilo indeed.

Mikes Santoro and Dorris have been too busy dealing with sewage pumps, sump pumps and other pumps to worry about what they were going to call their S. Eighth Street purchase, the restaurant space that once held James. The pumps must be fixed as they’ve titled their cuisine-TBD restaurant The Mildred. It ain’t sexy but it works.
Philly’s Latin king DJ Rahsaan and his AfroTaino Productions, bring Thom Yorke’s favorite multi-lingual MC Ana Tijoux, Academy Award-winning musician Jorge Drexler and local spoken word diva Denice Frohman to Dobbs July 15. ‘Musica’ estilo indeed.
Cherry Bomb Bus babe and Hen with a Knife lady, chef Jen Zavala has just left her most recent digs at Interstate Draft House up north according to the restaurant. We’re waiting to hear from Zavala but the restaurant’s employees say it was a genial mutual parting of the ways and that she packed up her knives on Sunday.
It ain’t the Gold Club but rapper/actor/50th birthday boy Schoolly D starts a different kind of new late night gig spinning at Alla Spina every Thursday starting last night. A toast to Schoolly with mortadella hot dogs for everyone.
A Charlie Mack weekend means a Will Smith weekend. Smith’s one-time driver and long time pal Mack always hosts a grand lot for his Party 4 Peace Celebrity Weekend (July 20-22) and this one’s no different. Big Willie, son Jaden, boxer Bernard Hopkins, Tyrese Gibson, Lil Mama, Nia Long and Reverend Run Simmons are amongst the attendees (check here for locations, times and prices).
Plus the Smiths and the American Benefactor Foundation will honor Mack Alston July 20 at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University. Info: 267-687-0223 or events@americanbenefactor.org.
Things are looking bleak already for the still new Revel Casino in AC. According to revenue numbers courtesy the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, Revel is eighth amongst Atlantic City’s casinos for three months straight. In June it netted just under $15 million while the number one casino, The Borgata, netted near $55 mil. Revel’s hotel is mighty fine, its clubs are fun, the restaurants are swank and folks such as I loved Beyonce and Kanye West.
Philly noisemaker Nick Millevoi welcomes the UK’s Surface to Air to Café Clave (4305 Locust) and its Rip Rig improv series on July 15.
So I’m reading this month’s Playboy mag just for the articles when I get to it list of America’s best saloons, and I see that S. 18th Street’s Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. made the top 50. Yay them.
WHOWHATWHERE: By now everyone know that Stateside’s George Sabatino took home the title of Hop Chef from the Bouwerij Ommegang-sponsored World Café Live beer-and-eats pairing Tuesday night. But can we give a hand to DJ Jersey Dan for providing the steady sonics in which to appreciate Sabatino’s smoked beef cheeks with beer boiled peanuts and pickled watermelon rind, huh? Not long after he group-hugged it out with his Jersey Shore castmates for the end of the sixth season of MTV’s reality series (as well as this cast’s finale), DJ Pauly D made his way his new Saturday gig at Harrah’s The Pool in Atlantic City where he played host to Mob Wives’ Renee Graziano and Drita D’Avanzo right after Graziano had his house robbed for her birthday. You might have thought Germany’ heaviest metal heads The Scorpions would have picked something like Brauhaus Schmitz for their pre-Mann Center bash but no. They hit McGillin’s in the Gayborhood and sipped Jagermeister. Now that’s ’80s. When Philly-born and Cheltenham-schooled photographer Mary Ellen Mark returned home for the premier of her latest exhibition, Prom (currently at the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Perelman Building) she not only greeted well-wishers from Cheltenham High, she brought her husband, film director Martin Bell and met up with several of the high school students she made her subjects during the time of Prom’s shoots between 2006 and 2009. Sigourney Weaver hit up a. kitchen the other night, sans make up. Good for her. The television series she’s still shooting in Philly, Political Animals, gets its debut July 15 on the USA Network. The cast of Jerseylicious was spied taking trapeze lessons from I.Fly Trapeze school at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. When he wasn’t busy selling off Le Bec Fin, Georges Perrier was filling his days opening and making a success of the Art of Bread in Narbeth. Perrier and his partners just celebrated one year of bread and art.
