✚ Jesus, Bombs and Ice Cream by Meg Augustin
What do terrorism, welding and ice cream have in common? Not much, but when combined they offer a surprising perspective on the ten years since 9/11. Philly author and activist Shane Claiborne is teaming up with Ben and Jerry's Ben Cohen (pictured) for a presentation of excess militarism in America. “Jesus, Bombs, and Ice Cream” is a 90-minute variety show featuring a world champion juggler, testimony from an Iraq war veteran, a live mural creation, a welder who will turn a AK47 into a bowline, live music and a Internet presentation with Afghan youth working for peace. If that isn’t enough, an all-you-can-eat ice cream-a-thon will follow the whole shebang.
Sept. 10, 7 p.m., $10-$20, World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., jesusbombsandicecream.eventbrite.com.
✚ Portraits for Patriots by Massimo Pulcini
In honor of the public service heroes who put their lives on the line daily, Warmdaddy's and Calumet Photographic are offering free family portraits to all current and former local police officers, first responders, firefighters and members of the military. The 15-minute photo shoot with professional photographer Laney Lane will get you an 8x10” print to hang up to commemorate the value of family and our national heroes. There are limited spots available so call to make your appointment. Say Cheese!
Sat., Sept. 10, 10 a.m., free with scheduled appointment, Warmdaddy’s, 1400 Columbus Blvd., 215-399-2155.
✚ Family Jam: 9/11 Memory Tiles by Cassie Owens
Ever since 9/11/01, the Philadelphia Magic Gardens’ (PMG) Isaiah Zagar has created tiles in remembrance. For this event, the PMG is inviting families to take a tour of Zagar’s memory tiles and make their own. Visitors will be given self-hardening clay to make impressions of their own design, and take their new creations home at the end of the afternoon. Younger participants who did not witness 9/11 will be able to use any event that has truly affected them as inspiration.
Sat., Sept. 11, noon-4 p.m., free with museum admission, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, 1020 South St., 215-733-0390, phillymagicgardens.org.
✚ National Constitution Center by Brian Wilensky
Through collaboration between the Religious Leaders Council, the Interfaith Center and other groups of the greater Philadelphia area, a pledge has been written to unify the people and promote peace and tolerance. The pledge will be put on display at 9:30 a.m. at the National Constitution Center and all patrons visiting are encouraged to sign it and add any personal words or prayers. The Center will also have 9/11-related events inside with free admission for all first responders (that’s you, EMT, fire and police) and a public commemoration from Mayor Michael Nutter at 5:30 p.m. on Independence Mall.
Sat., Sept. 11, 9:30 a.m., free with museum admission, National Constitution Center, 525 Arch St., 215-409-6600, constitutioncenter.org.
✚ Walk From River to River by Matt Cantor
Just days after September 11, 2001, you may have spotted a group of dancers and other Philadelphians clad in white, slowly walking from the Joan of Arc statue on the Parkway toward the Delaware river. On the 10th anniversary of the attacks, Anne-Marie Mulgrew and Dancers Company will reprise what Mulgrew calls a “walking meditation.” Catch the group this Sunday during its “Walk from River to River,” starting at the statue and ending on Penn’s Landing by Chestnut Street. You’ll recognize the group of dancers and locals “from all walks of life” by their white umbrellas.
Sun., Sept. 11,10 a.m., free, Joan of Arc statue, E. Atlantic Street and Benjamin Franklin Pkwy., 215-462-7720.
✚ Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology by Meg Augustin
The Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology will feature several events and exhibitions that mark the milestone anniversary. On Sun., Sept. 11, the museum will offer two lectures: one on the World Trade Center and its symbolism and another on constructive political and
social dialogue. At 1 p.m., “Making A Monument: The Fall and Rise of the World Trade Center” will feature art professor Dr. David Brownlee’s recounting of the 1964 architectural unveiling of the buildings, their criticism, their destruction and their idol-like afterlife. At 3 p.m. actor Reg E. Cathey will present “Cato: A Tragedy: 9/11.” The play, which was originally played for the Founding Fathers, tells the story of the Roman Senator Cato making his last stand against Julius Caesar. The scenes and readings will be followed by town-hall style discussions about the impact of 9/11 on America. Running in conjunction with the discussions is “Fragments from 9/11,” an exhibition of excavated artifacts from Ground Zero that will be on display through Nov. 6.
Sat., Sept. 11, 1 p.m., pay what you will, Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, 3260 South Street, penn.museum.
