JUST DUDE IT: Fight cancer, Big Lebowski-style!
If you’ve seen The Big Lebowski, you know The Dude doesn’t take many things seriously. Bowling is an exception. The fight against cancer is another. The Dude Hates Cancer (TDHC) is a bowling tournament and fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Thirty-nine teams will square off, round by round, until a final winner is decided. Last year, the event raised upwards of $60,000. This year, they’re shooting for $80,000.
“When it started, I didn’t expect it to grow this fast ... It’s been pretty neat to watch,” event chair Timothy Maxwell explains. The first edition, held in 2006, made $1,400 for the LLS. Maxwell thought of TDHC after his father was diagnosed with leukemia, hoping to combine his love for The Big Lebowski with a benefit that would help those affected by the disease. Leading up to the first bowl-off, his mother was diagnosed with another form of blood cancer. This only deepened his resolve. His determination paid off, literally. Local businesses and restaurants jumped on board, more and more bowlers registered to compete and the event transformed into the daylong shindig it is today — featuring raffles, live music, a silent auction, food and more.
A big pull for the event (besides a place in Lebowski glory) is the Philadelphia Restaurant Pass. The annual grand raffle prize holds gift certificates to 26 top-notch, down-for-the-cause local restaurants. It’s worth a staggering $1,700. Another prize up for grabs is a secret, autographed goodie from Jeff Bridges himself. Bowlers and onlookers alike can look forward to Lebowski-themed costumes, some serious bowling swag and the musical stylings of The Doublewides, Chris Kasper, Orbit to Leslie and Hezekiah Jones.
It’s going down at North Bowl Lounge N' Lanes. Is it safe to assume that they’ll be serving The Dude’s signature cocktail? “Oh yeah, definitely,” Maxwell assures us. The Dude abides. So who’s ready for some strikes and White Russians?
Sat., Aug. 27, 11:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m., free for spectators, $280 per team, North Bowl Lounge N' Lanes, 909 North 2nd St., thedudehatescancer.com.
