LOL WITH IT: Camp Woods Plus @ L'Etage
The Feekos took the stage first, bringing their usual array of absurd premises grounded in emotional, relatable characters. Some of their bits included a guy visiting a veterinarian with pointed inquiries as to what they do with the neutered canine testes, and a doctor who just found out he has cancer, trying to give his patient test results without making it all about himself.
LOL WITH IT: Camp Woods Plus @ L'Etage
This past Wednesday, Camp Woods Plus featured sketch comedy by The Feeko Brothers and NYC’s Reformed Whores (as well as, obviously, Camp Woods).
The Feekos took the stage first, bringing their usual array of absurd premises grounded in emotional, relatable characters. Some of their bits included a guy visiting a veterinarian with pointed inquiries as to what they do with the neutered canine testes, and a doctor who just found out he has cancer, trying to give his patient test results without making it all about himself.
Each Camp Woods Plus show features an out-of-town act. Taking the stage next were Reformed Whores. They’ve performed at famous NYC venues such as Caroline’s On Broadway, Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theatre and Gotham Comedy Club. These two young ladies — brandishing a ukulele and an accordion — sang hilarious, modern songs about drunk-dialing and douche-baggery in a very old-westerny style. Think a duo of young Dolly Parton singing Stephen Lynch tunes.
Headlining, of course, were Camp Woods. The well-proven Philly act — founded in 2009 by buddies Pat Foy, Sam Narisi and JP Boudwin, to be joined later by Philly comedy scene-members Brendan Kennedy, Billy Bob Thompson, Rob Baniewicz and Madonna Marie-Refugia — presented a number of stage and multi-media sketches. Some of their pieces utilized only a few members of the group, such as a hilarious talk show where Baniewicz couldn’t say Joseph Gordon Levitt’s name properly, and Refugia attempted to laugh it off while he repeatedly said “Jordan Gordon Levitt.” Others employed nearly the entire group, such as a futuristic museum exhibit where a wealthy father brought his son to gawk at a terrarium full of blue-collar construction workers from the present-day.
The entire L’Etage upstairs — which probably holds no more than thirty-five — was pretty much in stitches the entire time. You may want to consider this inexpensive monthly show as one of the best — if not THE best — options in live sketch comedy available to the Philadelphia area. Their next L’Etage show is Oct. 4, with a break during September for their Fringe Festival run at the Adrienne Theatre (they’re doing three 45-minute best-of sets Sept. 15-17, as well as a David Lynch-themed show on the 18th).
Starting in October, all Camp Woods Plus shows at L’Etage will be on the first Thursday of the month with doors at 8 p.m., show at 830 p.m. for $10. More information on Camp Woods Plus here.
