MAN CAVE: The Machine @ Scottish Rite Theatre, 2/11

Man Cave is a testosterone-laden Monday feature that highlights the weekend haps of a pop culture-loving Philly dude.

Saturday, I hopped across the river to see The Machine at Collingswood's Scottish Rite Theatre. The band's renditions of fan favorites are studio-sharp as ever, and their unique take on the more obscure tunes are fascinating — and suitably psychedelic. Here's the setlist:

"Welcome To the Machine" — The Machine plays this at every show; it's their calling card, and suitably so.

"Yet Another Movie" — One of the more obscure cuts from Floyd's catalog, but easily one of the best tracks of the post-Waters era.

"Breathe / Time" — These must-play staples showoff The Machines ability for pitch-perfect replication.

"Mother" — Frontman Joe Pascarell makes an eerie vocal leap ahead in time to this Roger Waters ballad. His spot-on Waters could be a party trick on its own, were there no music to accompany it.

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond" — A defining moment at any Machine show.

"Remember a Day" — This psych-pop ditty from the Floyd's early days gets revamped into a rockin' boogie with heavier guitars and an expanded breakdown.

"Pigs on the Wing / Pigs (Three Different Ones)" — There's always a lottery for which of the three epic tracks off Animals — Pigs, Dogs, Sheep — Joe and the boys will opt for. You're not likely to get two of them, but you're almost guaranteed to get one.

"When The Tigers Broke Free" — This war ballad about the death of Waters' father is handled with all the delicate reverence of one's own family member, which, undoubtedly, The Machine consider Waters to be.

"Another Brick in the Wall (Part II)" — We don't need no education!

"Echoes" — This is the goods! Keyboardist Scott Chasolen really explores the venue space during the intro of this 1970 prog masterpiece. Some fifteen-odd minutes are shaved off this 23-minute freak-out, in order to save time for more tunes.

"Hey You / Money" — Fan favorites nailed verbatim.

"Set the Controls For the Heart of the Sun" — This psychedelic trip from 1968 is one of the tracks where The Machine really takes license to experiment, and successfully so. Their version has all the mystery and enigma of the original, except with more modern electrodes and an increased cinematic atmosphere.

"Wish You Were Here" — duh.

Encore: "Comfortably Numb" — Pascarell shreds this hallmark with chops that would make David Gilmour proud.

Your best chance to catch The Machine will be in Atlantic City at the Trump Marina on April 28. After that, you're going to have to wait to see if they do their big Thanksgiving-time show at the Keswick.
