ON THE FRINGE: In the Blood

POSTED: Friday, September 9, 2011, 10:30 AM

In the Blood presents a modern day Scarlett Letter — a single, black welfare mother of five. While it adopts the themes of Hawthorne’s anti-Puritan novel, it does not mimic the storyline. Here, five children are surrounded by their mother’s dire straits and the soliloquies of their Hester-hating makers. The play provides a rich dialogue, but this piece is more an opportunity to see the University of the Arts students shine. Moving and real, like actors beyond their years, this group of students shows us how acting is done.

Sept. 9, 8 p.m.; Sept. 10, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.; Sept. 11, 2 p.m. & 7 p.m.; $15, Caplan Studio at The University of the Arts, 211 S. Broad St., 16th floor. MORE INFO HERE.
